Finding a job in a bad economic environment can be tricky to navigate. You’ll find yourself on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It’s depressing to apply for job, after job, after job and not get interviews.

When you do find you have an interview. There might be feelings of anxiety. It’s natural to want to make a good first impression, so you might worry about selecting the right outfit, turning up on time, beating the traffic, and trying to find a park. You might have the additional requirements of having to hire a babysitter, or finding someone to look after your elderly parents or your disabled partner.

It’s depressing to read an email saying that you haven’t been shortlisted. You might have missed out it an opportunity or role that you thought you were perfect for you and your career. So how do you stay motivated?

Here are some useful and informative websites that might make your job search easier and more targeted.

The best places in Australia to look for work online are the larger traditional well-known websites, such as:

  • Defence Jobs
  • Jobsearch Australia
  • Jora Australia
  • Seek Australia

It is not recommended you agree to long-term volunteering and unpaid internship roles over 6 weeks unless it is something you feel passionate about. Avoid any jobs that pay under the minimum wage, or contra instead of payment.

Some people can find work successfully via word of mouth, or with job posts on Facebook and Gumtree. However, use these with care and don’t sign anything without a face-to-face meeting with your manager. The jobs listed here may turn into a scam, so proceed with caution. Always have your interviews and meetings in a public space where you feel safe.
