Boxing Day sales are one of the most anticipated shopping events of the year, offering irresistible discounts and unbeatable deals. But, amidst the rush to grab some post-Christmas bargains, shoppers can become easy targets for scammers. As Australians gear up to shop the sales, PayPal’s latest research reveals a concerning rise in “distracted shopping” and risky online shopping habits. With nearly 2-in-5 Aussies (38%) planning to shop the Boxing Day sales and 73% admitting to multitasking while shopping, it’s no surprise that cyber criminals are taking advantage of this distracted mindset. To help you navigate the post-Christmas shopping frenzy safely, here’s how to avoid falling victim to Boxing Day scams while scoring those sweet sales.

Distracted shopping: A growing risk

The appeal of Boxing Day sales lies in their convenience – shopping from the comfort of your home, comparing prices with just a few clicks, and avoiding the chaos of crowded stores. However, the PayPal research uncovered that multitasking during online shopping is putting Australians at risk. Whether it’s shopping while watching TV, lying in bed, or working from home, distractions are on the rise. In fact, 4-in-10 Australians (43%) admit to shopping online while distracted by other activities. This presents an easy opportunity for scammers to exploit consumers who aren’t paying full attention.

Aussies should be aware that online shopping fraud is the second most reported type of fraud in the country, and with scammers becoming more sophisticated, it’s important to stay vigilant.

The growing problem of fake websites

One of the most concerning statistics from PayPal’s research is that 1-in-10 Australians (10%) have made a purchase through a fraudulent website, and 3-in-10 (30%) have been lured to visit a fake website altogether. Cyber criminals use these counterfeit sites to steal personal information and money, often making them look deceptively legitimate.

In the age of AI, these fraudulent sites can easily mimic well-known retailers, making it harder to spot the fakes. PayPal’s Consumer Shopping Expert, Bonnie Brady, warns, “It’s important to stay focused and ensure you’re buying from legitimate retailers.”

How to shop safely this Boxing Day

While Boxing Day sales are a fantastic way to grab deals, PayPal urges shoppers to proceed with caution. Here are some tips to help you avoid scams and keep your personal details secure:

  1. Don’t Click on Suspicious Links
During sales periods, scam emails or texts from unfamiliar senders are common. Always avoid clicking on links in unverified communications. Instead, go directly to the retailer’s official website to check for deals.
  2. Watch Out for Generic Greetings
Be cautious of promotional emails that start with generic greetings like “Dear User” or “Hello Customer.” Reputable retailers will use your name in their communications. If you spot a suspicious email, report it as phishing.
  3. Be Careful When Sharing Personal Information
Don’t overshare sensitive information such as credit card details or passwords, and avoid answering personal security questions like the name of your first pet.
  4. Check the Website’s URL
Before entering payment details, make sure the website’s URL starts with “https” and includes a secure padlock symbol. This ensures that the site is encrypted and your personal data is protected.
  5. Take Your Time
When shopping online, take a moment to assess what you’re doing. Scammers often use high-pressure tactics, like “urgent action required” or “limited time offers,” to push you into making rushed decisions. Don’t let these messages trick you into hasty purchases.
  6. Limit Distractions
While it’s tempting to multitask, it’s best to focus on one task at a time when shopping online. Whether you’re browsing from your phone or laptop, take the extra few seconds to double-check your order, the website’s legitimacy, and any potential warning signs of fraud.
  7. Use Secure Payment Methods
Opt for secure payment methods, such as PayPal, which offers buyer protection. Avoid entering your payment details directly on unknown websites and always choose secure options for your transactions.

Stay informed

The digital world is full of risks, and it’s crucial to stay informed about the latest scams. PayPal’s research reveals that nearly half of Australians (45%) are concerned about falling victim to scams this holiday season. As scammers grow more sophisticated, it’s important to be aware of the most common methods they use to target consumers.
