If you are a budding astronaut, rocket scientist or Lego engineer (or have one at home!), clear your calendars for Friday 3 October — because Space Day is landing in Sydney, and it’s going to be out of this world.

Part of IAC 2025 Space Week, Space Day is the biggest free public event of the world’s largest space gathering — the International Astronautical Congress — and it’s set to transform Darling Harbour into a launchpad of discovery, play and imagination. From 09:00 to 17:00, kids and families can dive into a galaxy of hands-on fun, inspiring science and unforgettable experiences.

Expect rocket-building challenges, Lego play zones, and the chance to meet real astronauts — including Australia’s first female astronaut, Katherine Bennell-Pegg. Snap a selfie with Astro, the Australian Space Agency’s towering 10-metre inflatable astronaut, or sign up for a photo and autograph session with space explorers who’ve truly gone where few humans have gone before.

Little engineers will love testing their skills with Roo-ver, a remote-controlled Mars rover they can drive themselves, while curious minds can send their “face to the Moon” in a quirky photo experience. Budding scientists can explore Astrosite, the world’s first mobile neuromorphic telescope, or step inside the immersive Storybox cube to discover how space technology is solving real-world challenges here on Earth.

Space Day

The fun doesn’t stop there — exhibitions, science shows, interactive workshops, and displays from universities and space agencies will keep kids busy all day. They can even join the Young Space Explorers Program, a special series of hands-on STEM sessions designed to inspire the next generation of astronauts and innovators.

And the best it is that entry is completely free — you just need to register online. Whether you stay for an hour or make a day of it, Space Day promises to be an unforgettable school holiday adventure that’s equal parts educational and exhilarating.

Where: Darling Harbour Precinct, Sydney
When: Friday, 3 October 2025, 09:00–17:00
Cost: Free (registration required)
Highlights: Astronaut meet-and-greets, Lego play zones, STEM workshops, science shows, rover demos, and more
