Five Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Laptop before Windows 10 End of Service Hits

If your laptop still hums along on Microsoft Windows 10, there’s an important date you need to mark in your calendar: 14 October 2025. That’s the day Microsoft will officially pull the plug on Windows 10 support – and while it might sound like a routine tech update, it’s anything but.

After this date, Windows 10 devices will no longer receive vital security patches, bug fixes or technical support. In simple terms, that means your trusty laptop could become more vulnerable to viruses and cyber threats, struggle to run new apps, and may not perform as smoothly as it once did. And with millions of Australians still using Windows 10 devices at home, school, and work, this change is going to affect households, students and professionals alike.

The question is, how do you know if your device needs upgrading – and how urgent is it, really? According to the tech experts at Acer, there are five clear signs that your current laptop is ready for retirement.

1. It’s slowing you down

If you’ve noticed that it takes longer to boot up your computer than it does to make a cup of tea, you’re not imagining it – your hardware could be struggling to keep up. Sluggish performance, freezing apps, or lagging when multitasking are all red flags. Older devices simply don’t have the processing power or memory to handle today’s software demands, especially once support for Windows 10 ends.

2. Your favourite apps stop playing nice

Another common clue that it’s time to move on? Compatibility issues. As software evolves, newer apps, tools, and accessories are often designed with the latest operating systems in mind. Once Windows 10 reaches End of Service, you might find certain programs stop working altogether or become unstable. That can mean more frequent crashes, annoying errors, and limited functionality – not ideal when you’re trying to finish a uni assignment, join a work meeting, or stream your favourite show.

3. You’re exposed to security risks

This is perhaps the most important reason to upgrade. Without regular security updates, your laptop becomes more vulnerable to malware, viruses, and cyberattacks. That’s bad news whether you’re managing sensitive work documents, helping your kids learn online, or storing personal photos and financial information. Keeping your digital life safe means running a device that continues to receive the latest security protections – and Windows 10 won’t offer that after October.

4. It’s showing signs of wear and tear

Hardware can only hold up for so long. If your battery barely lasts through a lecture, the fan sounds like a small jet engine, or the device heats up just from browsing the web, these are all signs that your laptop’s internals are on the decline. These physical issues often go hand-in-hand with performance problems, and once support ends, they’ll only become more noticeable.

5. It can’t run Windows 11

Even if your device is still functional, it might not meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 – which means no access to the latest performance improvements, productivity features, and ongoing updates. Whether you’re helping the kids with homework, growing a side hustle, or gaming on the weekends, upgrading ensures your laptop continues to deliver a smooth, secure, and efficient experience.

Ready to upgrade? Here’s where to start

If you’ve ticked off one or more of the signs above, it might be time to consider a new device. The good news is that there’s something for every type of user and budget. Acer, one of the world’s leading technology brands, offers a range of options designed to meet different needs:

  • For students. The Acer Aspire 14 AI is affordable, reliable, and ideal for everyday tasks like homework, online learning, and streaming.
  • For professionals. The Acer Swift Go 14 is lightweight, efficient, and built for productivity on the move.
  • For creatives. The Acer Swift Edge 14 AI combines power and style, making it perfect for content creation, design, and other demanding creative work.

With the countdown to Windows 10’s End of Service now well and truly on, now’s the time to make sure your tech is future-ready. Upgrading your laptop isn’t just about staying current – it’s about staying secure, productive, and prepared for whatever comes next.
