If you’re after a set of wireless running headphones that include an in-ear heart rate monitor, SoundSport Pulse by Bose could be just what you’re looking for.
It works really well with a variety of running apps and services to help you use informative heart-rate metrics to monitor whether you’re training in the way that suits you best.
A built-in heart rate sensor from PerformTek tracks your performance, directly from your ear, so the idea is that you can optimise your workout, without missing a beat of your favourite music.A downside: they are rather expensive at $299; especially considering Bose hasn’t produced a training platform of its own to accompany the headphones.
While I love the idea of sports headphones, the Bose SoundSport Pulse is just a little too big for my liking. The buds are fine, with rubber casings that slide easily enough into the ear and fit nice and tightly. You’re also given a range of different sizes which you can change around as you please.
However, the body of the buds are quite large and thick and take a while to get used to. There’s a standard-size neckband design, including a cable that connects the earbuds, that works well in making sure you won’t easily lose your headphones.
How does Bose SoundSport Pulse Work?
The Bose Connect app displays accurate heart rate readings in real-time from your headphones, so tracking your performance is very easy. The Pulse technology also works with popular fitness apps like MapMyRun, Runkeeper, Endomondo and Runtastic.
I really liked the wingtips, which work by fitting on the outer ear and making sure the headphones stay in place. There’s also a clip to attach to your clothing and helps you secure the cable behind your neck.
When testing the headphones on a run, I was impressed that the wingtips never came loose and felt pretty comfortable. However, I really don’t like the way the bulky earpiece protrudes – rather too ‘Frankenstein-ish’ for my liking. But there’s no faulting the incredible quality.
Is Bose SoundSport Pulse Waterproof?
Although not waterproof, the headphones are sweat-resistant thanks to its hydrophobic cloth. This means you can be stress-free during your most intense workout since they can handle quite a bit of moisture. That said, they are not meant to be showered with – that’s too much moisture!
Are the Bose SoundSport Noise-Cancelling?
The Bose SoundSport, unfortunately, is not equipped with noise-cancelling technology. This is probably for the best, given that runners need to be aware of their surroundings.
Within the right earbud is a tiny power button and a remote control and microphone along the cable. If you want to turn up the music or take a call, just use the inline mic/remote that lets you answer/end calls, play/pause tracks and adjust volume—without reaching for your phone. It’s built to cope with sweat and rain but there’s a special hydrophobic coating that gets rid of any moisture that’s built up.
The SoundSport Pulse come is predominantly black colour with some red features. You can personalise settings to make them all yours, and it easy to pair, switch and control your devices. Overall, it’s a simple, intuitive app that can make all the difference to your exercise routine.
