Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam: Automated Background Removal

The latest Logitech C922 webcam is similar to its predecessor C920 but with a few great improvements. Looks-wise the C922 is almost identical to the C920, apart from an updated logo. It’s still in the same form; a black rectangular shape that sits above your computer screen.

There’s a single lens in the centre and microphones at each side. The bulk of the mount hangs down at the rear of your computer while a small section of the front lip hangs off the top – this didn’t both me at all but, if that annoys you, you can always perch the webcam on the tripod that thankfully comes along in the package.

There’s also a nice shiny black finish around the camera lens that doesn’t appear in the C920 and there’s also a special white glow compared to the blue light on the C920. It also comes with an ample 6-foot USB cable that extends from the rear.

The best upgrades include 720p streaming at 60 frames per second and – best of all – automated background removal. The C922 and its software enable you to remove your background entirely, leaving just you there as though you were sitting in front of a green screen. It’s the best webcam I’ve ever used because the quality is just so good; crisp and clear. Even if you’re sitting in a dark room, with the only light being from your PC, the webcam image will be perfect.

Logitech’s software allows you to tweak the contrast and brightness so you can make yourself look more visually appealing and that’s always a good thing whether you like to prioritise that kind of thing and, let’s face it, most of us want to look at least half decent.

As for the automated background remover, it’s perfect for Youtubers. Or, if you’re like me and you regularly Skype, imagine being able to make the mess in your living room disappear while the relatives you’re chatting to in London are under the delusion that you’re a neat freak!

Of course, you could still do this with Logitech’s C920 in software but the C922 is superior because it comes fully equipped with Personify ChromaCam. How does it work? It features Intelligent Shape Recognition which basically means that it looks for anything in the background that doesn’t resemble a human and just removes it.

The Personify software aims to detect your head and shoulders and remove everything else around it. One downside is the background removal takes a bit of time, but it’s worth waiting for.

The box comes with a great mini tripod, with legs extending to 18cm. It’s got a good, solid, adjustable head, which is great because you don’t always want to attach the camera to your monitor, especially if you’re vlogging or streaming. So, I’m really impressed that Logitech included the tripod in the whole package.

Another great feature of C922 is the price – AU$169.95 – and while it’s not an earth shattering upgrade, it’s still one of the best webcams around.
