Advice On How To Modify Your Social Media In A Pandemic Like Coronavirus

One of my Facebook groups were discussing how to handle and adjust their social media now a pandemic had been declared with the global spread of coronavirus. There were a number of different opinions, depending on the country and business. Here is some of the advice:

Social Media
  • Keep posting to social media as business as usual.
  • Don’t stop posting as anyone stuck at home will be bored and potentially looking at social media and surfing the web.
  • Avoid putting up lists of rules.
  • Do not repost gossip articles or rumours from social media – always quote from the official source.
  • Avoid making jokes about the situation.
  • Use technology to your advantage – can you hold live video events, or allow your staff to work from home?
  • Cancelling any public events for the upcoming month – you may prefer to use the words ‘postponed’ or ‘rescheduled’ if that is a feasible possibility. Ensure you cancel events with as much notice as possible.
  • Analysts expect Google and Facebook to have a decline in advertising spend in travel, retail, consumer packed goods and entertainment over the next couple of months.
  • Travel bloggers are shifting to writing articles based around their own neighbour and city, or rewriting old posts to improve and update them.
  • Brick and mortar clients are seeing a dip in foot traffic, so consider offering alternative services – promote any free home delivery options or online shops as alternatives.
