AI Glasses Are Suddenly Everywhere And Meta Wants Them on Your Face

Not long ago, the idea of talking to your sunglasses sounded like something from a sci-fi film. Now it is starting to look a lot like the next phase of everyday tech.

Meta has announced a fresh wave of updates to its AI glasses lineup, signalling that the category is moving beyond novelty and into something closer to mainstream wearables. The tech giant says it has already sold millions of units across its smart glasses collection in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, with sales more than tripling year on year.

In other words, the once experimental category of AI powered eyewear is quietly gathering momentum.

The latest update introduces new prescription-friendly Ray-Ban Meta styles, expanded Oakley Meta options and additional software features designed to make the glasses more useful in everyday life.

At the centre of the update are two new Ray-Ban Meta optical frames designed specifically for people who want smart glasses they can actually wear all day. Called Blayzer and Scriber, the frames have been designed to support most prescriptions while maintaining the slimmer silhouette people expect from regular eyewear.

The Blayzer style takes a rectangular approach and will be available in both standard and large sizes, while the Scriber frame features a softer, more rounded shape. Both designs aim to feel less like futuristic gadgets and more like traditional glasses, with lightweight builds and adjustable features designed to suit different face shapes.

Those details matter. One of the biggest hurdles facing smart glasses has always been wearability. If a pair of tech powered frames feels bulky or looks overly futuristic, most people simply will not wear them beyond a novelty moment.

Meta appears to be addressing that directly, leaning heavily into comfort and prescription compatibility as it tries to push AI glasses into everyday use.

The new optical styles will arrive in a range of colours, including Matte Black, Transparent Black and Transparent Dark Olive, alongside seasonal shades such as Transparent Ice Grey and Stone Beige. The glasses also come with a new charging case designed to double as a protective carry case.

Prices for the new Ray-Ban Meta optical frames will start at AUD $709 when they arrive at selected optical retailers from 15 April.

Alongside the new frames, Meta is also expanding its Oakley Meta lineup, a range that leans more heavily toward sport and outdoor use. The Oakley Meta Vanguard and HSTN models will soon be available in new frame colours and lens combinations, including performance lenses designed for different lighting conditions.

Some of the additions clearly target athletes. One option includes Prizm Dark Golf lenses designed to enhance contrast and colour on the course, while another introduces Transitions lenses that adapt automatically to changing light.

It is part of a broader strategy to position AI glasses not just as a gadget for early adopters, but as eyewear that can slot into specific lifestyles whether that is sport, travel or everyday commuting.

There is also a cosmetic angle to the update. Meta is introducing limited edition seasonal colours for existing Ray-Ban Meta frames, including transparent peach tones and tinted sapphire lenses. The idea is simple. If glasses are becoming a piece of tech, they still need to feel like fashion.

But the most practical update may be happening on the software side. Meta is expanding the live translation feature built into its AI glasses so conversations can be translated in real time across an additional 20 languages. The list now includes Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Tamil, Marathi and Arabic, among others.

In theory, that means two people speaking different languages could hold a conversation while the glasses translate speech on the fly.

It is the kind of feature that highlights how Meta sees the future of AI wearables. Less about novelty features and more about subtle tools that sit quietly in the background of everyday life.

The company is also widening the global rollout of its glasses, with new markets including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, Colombia and Peru set to gain access in the coming months.

Taken together, the updates suggest something interesting is happening in the wearable tech space. Smart glasses are slowly moving out of the experimental stage and into something closer to a real consumer category.

For years, tech companies have been searching for the next device that might sit alongside the smartphone. AI glasses may not be there yet, but the fact that millions of people are already wearing them suggests the idea is no longer as far fetched as it once seemed.
