Australians come to Twitter for many reasons, with the main ones reflected in the top ten trends locally in 2015. My Kitchen Rules and Eurovision were two of the highest trending television programs for 2015, and 5SOS once again dominated Australian Twitter trends, taking out 5th place.

When it comes to the most followed Australians on Twitter, our many world-famous entertainment superstars dominate, with each of them using Twitter to give their massive global fan bases great insider access.

@CodySimpson is the most followed Australian on Twitter and to celebrate, Twitter created an emoji just for him. He was the first person in the world ever to have a Twitter emoji made of their face! 

The @5SOS boys are gaining on him though. 

@Luke5SOS racked up almost 2 million new followers this year 

There are also some new entries to the list, headed by @TroyeSivan who has had an amazing year on Twitter including ReTweets and shoutouts from @Adele and @TaylorSwift13. 

Most Tweeted Emojis around the world

Emojis have become such a huge part of how many of us communicate and sometimes Tweets can be made up entirely of smiley faces or love hearts- just ask Julie Bishop who has been dubbed the Queen of the Emoji for her Tweeting sprees. 

This year we launched a host of Twitter emojis in Australia for Cody Simpson, the Cricket World Cup, footy finals and the ARIA awards which our users have loved using. 

Twitter has compiled the most popular emojis used on the platform in 2015, with ‘face with tears of joy’ taking pride of place as number 1, while ‘smiling face with heart-shaped eyes’ took out number 2. Check out the full list below:
