ProSpend, Australia’s leading unified spend management platform, has launched a new report, Modern Spend and Expense Management: A CFO’s Guide to Financial Transformation.

Founded by one of Australia’s leading female financial entrepreneurs, Sharon Nouh, ProSpend is Australia’s leading unified business spend management platform, bringing together expense management, AP automation, and virtual cards in one seamless solution.

The report follows ProSpend’s ‘Start ProSpending’ campaign – its first brand campaign calling on Australian businesses to transform how they manage spend. The report addresses a critical challenge in today’s competitive environment: finance teams are losing valuable time and strategic opportunities to manual processes and disconnected systems.

The report unveils key insights from finance and expense management leaders, including:

  • Umair Awan, Tax Consultant and Business Advisor, BSAF Group
  • Kerryn Divall, CFO, RSL NSW
  • Dhanush Ganglani, CEO, EdenX
  • Sujeet Jena, Virtual CFO

  • Andrew Mooney, Fractional CFO
  • Jon Morgan, CEO, Venture Smarter

Tackling the complex technology challenges facing CFOs

Australian businesses are investing heavily in software solutions, with spending projected to reach $46 billion by 2025 — a 13.4% growth.Forward-thinking finance leaders are seizing this moment to consolidate expense management into unified platforms that scale with business ambitions.

However mid-market CFOs face spending complexities across distributed workforces and supplier networks. Yet within these challenges lies substantial opportunity. Replacing spreadsheets and fragmented systems with streamlined approaches creates strategic advantages beyond mere efficiency.

With 60% of CFOs now directly involved in technology strategy, they are now taking a more active role in driving change. This shift reflects mounting pressure to improve operations, reduce inefficiencies and deliver growth.

The report shares insights from finance professionals who’ve transformed spend management from an operational burden into a strategic asset. Their experiences reveal not just why change matters, but how finance leaders can drive this evolution within their organisations.

“Many mid-market finance teams are stuck with outdated expense management systems. While businesses adopt digital tools elsewhere, expense processes often lag, tied to legacy methods that drain time and expose organisations to avoidable risks,” says Sharon Nouh, CEO of ProSpend. “For CFOs, these inefficiencies are both operational headaches and strategic disadvantages in an increasingly competitive landscape.”

The Women in Finance Leading the Way On Digital Transformation

One female CFO featured in the report as leading the way is Kerryn Divall, CFO for RSL New South Wales.

She explains how modern unified spend management platforms deliver better data visibility and reporting—bringing both insights and peace of mind to finance leaders. Divall sees great promise in the analytical capabilities of advancing technology.

“As more data is interrogated, spend management should be easier,” says Divall. “Spend can be based on business-as-usual scenarios that can analyse past trends and then spend on new initiatives can be incorporated to test outcomes. Using AI, this should be done in a faster, more agile way,” she says.

Before investing in spend management solutions, Divall suggests CFOs understand exactly what your organisation needs.

“Managing technology spend is a bit like servicing your car,” she explains. “You know there is something wrong but have no idea how to fix it and so you have to trust that you have a great mechanic that won’t rip you off.

“I have been in organisations, particularly not-for-profit, where the level of understanding is low and vendors take advantage of the customer. Internally, it is really important to upskill and educate your teams on at least the basics.
