An online dating chat that starts with “Hey, how’s your weekend?” might feel safe. But, it’s hardly memorable
Fortunately, Hinge is shaking up the way Australians start conversations on dating apps. Its newest feature, Convo Starters, promises to rescue daters from the dreaded first-message freeze and turn those awkward “hey” moments into something a little more interesting. And a lot more confidence-boosting.
Convo Starters is all about nudging people away from small talk and toward meaningful conversation. It offers three personalised tips inspired by the photos and Prompt answers on someone’s profile. The key? It doesn’t write the messages for you, it inspires you to craft your own words while giving you the confidence to do it.

“Australia is an incredibly important market for Hinge, and we’re excited to bring Convo Starters to local daters,” says Jackie Jantos, Hinge’s CEO. “Starting a conversation can be vulnerable and tricky for anyone, and Convo Starters helps people express genuine interest. It’s another step in helping Aussies get out on great dates.”

The data backs this up. Hinge research shows that people who send a comment with their likes are twice as likely to actually go on a date. Meanwhile, vague questions like “how are you?” or “how’s your weekend?” rarely get a response. Convo Starters is designed to bridge that gap, offering thought starters that move the conversation beyond the mundane and into something memorable.
Ben Celebicic, Hinge’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, explains, “When we build at Hinge, we start with a simple question: where are people getting stuck? One of the most common moments is starting a conversation. We’re bringing in Convo Starters to Australia after seeing it help people feel more confident, set that first message, and actually build momentum toward a date. Our goal isn’t to speak for you, it’s help you show up as your authentic self. That’s why your AI offers tips, not scripts.”
Here’s how it works: when you’re browsing potential matches, you’ll see three unique conversation prompts tailored to that person’s profile. Each one is designed to inspire questions, exchange ideas, or invite a playful debate – anything that nudges the conversation past “hey” and toward something more memorable. Then, you take those ideas, write a first message in your own words, and send your like. It’s the perfect hybrid of human connection and tech support.
Does AI replace you in the dating journey?
Early testing shows it’s having a real impact. Over a third of daters said Convo Starters made them feel more confident reaching out. Overall, users sent more comments with their likes, and conversations became more engaging from the get-go.
Hinge is careful to emphasise that AI doesn’t replace you in the dating journey. It merely gives you a nudge. Gen Z daters, in particular, are embracing this kind of tech. Around 60% of younger Gen Z (aged 18–22) say they’re open to using AI as a “virtual second opinion” to help with dating. It’s part of a wider trend of creative communication – think sober dates, voice notes, and even playful experimentation with AI – aimed at closing the so-called Communication Gap.
For Australians frustrated by the monotony of small talk, this couldn’t come at a better time. TikTok is full of clips of people complaining about repetitive, uninspired opening lines, and Hinge’s data shows why that matters: 72% of users are more likely to consider a match when a like includes a message. Convo Starters gives daters inspiration to help them write messages they actually feel proud of sending.
Hinge Convo Starters
It’s part of Hinge’s broader approach to building dating tools grounded in research and real user feedback. With insights from a team of PhD researchers and behavioural scientists, every feature – from Prompt Feedback to Convo Starters – is designed to tackle real-world challenges faced by modern daters.
In short, Convo Starters is here to rescue us from uninspired small talk, one thoughtful first message at a time. Whether you’re a seasoned swiper or dipping your toes into the world of online dating for the first time, it’s a gentle reminder that the most successful conversations start with a little curiosity, a dash of personality, and maybe a sprinkle of AI guidance. Not a generic “hey.”
Next time you stare at a match’s profile, take a deep breath, let the AI whisper a few conversation ideas, and turn your digital connections into real-life moments After all, good conversation is the first step toward a great date.
