How to Block Someone on TikTok

There’s been a noticeable increase recently in spammy messages on TikTok. Here are some ways to manage your direct messages, and delete or mute a chat:

Friendly Hellos in TikTok

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so if it’s an innocent hello, I’ll just delete the message. Then I received the following: ‘This message will be removed to your Direct message and chat history will be deleted.’

I discovered I had around 20 friendly hellos (ie animated gifs of hand high fives, party popper and a hand wave).

Automated Welcome Messages

If you receive a welcome message that you don’t think you’ll need, then you can click on the message and Copy, Reply, Forward, Delete or Report. I just delete these.

If these automated messages start to become annoying, you might like to mute this person or unfollow them.

Spam and Adult Messages in TikTok

If a message is of an adult nature, like ‘open for a surprise’ with a beautiful woman. You can click on the profile name or the profile image to be taken to the users’ full profile. Then you can click on the burger menu in the top right corner and select Report, Block or Remove this follower.

Alternatively, you can click on the three dots in the top right corner. Here you can toggle on and off some settings for your communication with this person. You can: Mute notifications, Pin to the top, Report or Block.

You can Report a user for a number of reasons in TikTok including: Dangerous organizations and individuals, Illegal activities and regulated goods, Frauds and scams, Violent and graphic content, Animal cruelty, Suicide, self-harm and dangerous acts, Hate speech, Harassment or bullying, Pornography and nudity, Minor safety, Spam, Intellectual property infringement, Other.

I have anonymously reported – Misleading information, Violent and graphic content and Animal cruelty.

You may receive a System Notification. Mine read: ‘Thank you for taking the time to report user Karen. We appreciate your help in fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone on TikTok. We will take action if this content violates Tiktok’s Community Guidelines.

I like to place the person on Mute and then delete the chat history. Let’s face it, life is too short to be spammed.
