IWD: Tracey Spicer On What Cracking The Code Means To Her

Here, at Women Love Tech, it is our mission to empower young girls and women to overcome gender biases and embrace careers in STEM. That’s why for IWD 2023, we asked trailblazing women to share their thoughts on this year’s theme, ‘Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’.

One of these women is Tracey Spicer AM GAICD. Tracey is a professional keynote speaker, author, documentary host, and double Walkley Award winning journalist who’s interested in social justice, innovation, and telling stories. Her remarkable career has included hosting shows for ABC TV, Network Ten, and Sky News, as well as 2UE and ABC Radio.

Tracey’s new book, MAN-MADE: How the bias of the past is being built into the future, is coming out in May 2023. Her passion for tackling the gender bias made her the perfect person to include in our IWD23 video compilation.

Tracey commented that, “cracking the code is all about continuing to progress the fight for equity into the future.”

She also highlighted an often overlooked issue – that gender bias pervades our digital systems: “Unfortunately, a lot of the bias from the past is embedded in the machines that will run our futures through unbalanced and stereotypical data sets, right down to machine learning which is embedding racism, sexism and bigotry.”
