John Farnham: Hear The Voice … In His Own Voice

John Farnham is one of Australia’s most celebrated voices – with his iconic anthems playing as the soundtrack to many a memorable life moment for over half a century. And, this month Farnsey is bringing his personal memoir to life in an audiobook edition of “The Voice Inside“. Released by Hachette Australia, this highly anticipated project is co-written by Farnham and Poppy Stockell. But there’s an extra treat for listeners. John himself will narrate the audiobook, with his wife, Jill Farnham, lending her voice to the two chapters that she authored.

Farnham describes the experience of narrating the memoir as deeply emotional. “I’ve just finished narrating my audiobook,” Farnham shares “It was a bit of a roller-coaster ride. There were more than a few laughs, and some tears, but it made me realise how lucky I’ve been.” Undoubtedly referring to his 2022 diagnosis and struggle with mouth cancer.

With the memoir being long-awaited, fans of the music legend were thrilled when news of the audiobook broke. Vanessa Radnidge, Head of Literary at Hachette Australia, reflected on the significance of Farnham narrating the book himself. “Earlier this year when we announced John Farnham was writing his memoir with the help of Poppy Stockell, many fans eagerly asked if he would record the audiobook himself. At the time, we could not provide an answer. And, I honestly did not think it would be possible,” said Radnidge.

But, as she explains, Farnham’s commitment to his audience shone through, even in the face of personal challenges. “Despite the challenges posed by surgery and radiation, John dedicated many hours in the studio to record his book in his own voice. Now, I cannot imagine anyone else narrating it. Listening to him is such a delight – the heart, emotion, and showmanship are all there. So are the laughs, the giggles, and the tears.”

Radnidge perfectly captures the essence of what makes John Farnham a beloved Australian icon: his enduring connection to his fans. “John feels lucky to have lived the life he has,” she added. “And, I know we are all incredibly lucky to have John Farnham share the voice inside with all of us.”

The audiobook edition of The Voice Inside promises to offer more than just a behind-the-scenes look at Farnham’s life and career. As Farnham recounts his journey, listeners will hear first-hand about his humble beginnings in Melbourne. His ascent to becoming one of Australia’s top performers. And, the challenges he faced along the way. From the King of Pop era of the late 1960s to his record-breaking success with Whispering Jack, John has lived a life filled with incredible highs and testing lows.

In 1986, Farnham’s solo album Whispering Jack skyrocketed to number one on the Australian charts. And, stayed there for an astonishing 25 weeks. It remains Australia’s highest-selling album of all time by a local artist, a testament to the powerful connection he has built with his audience over the decades. His hit single “You’re the Voice” became a global anthem. Cementing his status as one of the country’s most iconic singers.

Fans who tune into the audiobook will also get a glimpse of the personal side of Farnham’s life. The inclusion of two chapters narrated by his wife, Jill, adds an intimate and heartfelt layer to the memoir. Their long-lasting relationship is one of the most cherished aspects of Farnham’s story. And, Jill’s contribution will resonate with listeners.

John’s story will come to life in the audiobook set for release on 30 October 2024. With The Voice Inside offering an emotional and inspiring narrative (which you can a listen to below).
