Normal People Scores 4 Emmy Noms But Daisy Edgar-Jones Misses Out

Earlier this week the 2020 Emmy Award nominations were announced and in these COVID-19 pandemic-influenced times, there’s a lot of interest in who’s being awarded what, because streaming television shows are now so widely viewed by such a large audience. Noticeably, the wildly popular Stan series Normal People scored a tidy four Emmys.

Normal People was nominated in the Limited Series division for: ead Actor (Paul Mescal), Outstanding Directing (Lenny Abrahamson), Outstanding Writing (Sally Rooney and Alice Birch) and Outstanding Casting (Louise Kiely).

But everyone noticed the lead actress of the series – Daisy Edgar-Jones – wasn’t one of those nominated in her category.

Paul Mescal was reported by Deadline as saying he was surprised as he is a huge fan of her as an actor: “I just would not for a second have have been able to do anything that I did without her. It wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

People in the industry have said the Lead Actress category was particularly hotly contested this year because Edgar-Jones’s competition included: Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Regina King (Watchmen), Octavia Spencer (Self Made) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).

If you’re one of the few people in Australia who haven’t watched Normal People yet, it’s streaming on Stan. For more on Normal People see our story here.

Here’s the full list of Emmy Nominations. The winners of the 72nd Emmy Awards will be announced on 20th September.
