Online Company Twine & Bloom Thrives With Mentoring From Facebook

Jessica Willis launched her small business after receiving sound advice and warm encouragement from a business Facebook group.

Within a month of setting up the Twine and Bloom website, Jess was receiving orders for her handmade floral letters and was accepted to appear on the popular British online shop, Not on the High Street.

Jessica had the idea to start the floral letter business after she tried a DIY tutorial she discovered on Pinterest. After visiting a nearby florist store she was hooked and loved putting together different floral arrangements.

A common problem with any business start-up is that you are stuck at home alone with questions and no one to talk things through with. Jess had heard about a business Facebook group called “Like Minded Bitches Drinking Wine” from her Sydney based friend Bliss, who suggested that the group would be helpful. She joined the online group within the hour.

The Facebook group was started by two Australian females who wanted to bounce ideas off of each other over dinner and wine. The group quickly grew in size and holds regular events.

Jessica asked the Facebook group for feedback about the potential name of her business, her branding and her website design. Often her answers would come flooding back at midnight or a couple of hours later. When a printing error was made with her business cards, the group gave her the idea to turn them into tags and notes.

Jessica needed some thank you cards, so she collaborated with fellow member and Australian small business owner, Norah Han from A Living Reverie. Norah makes stationery with breathtakingly beautiful watercolour design with touches of hand lettered calligraphy. It was the perfect style to complement her floral letters.

As well as Facebook, Jessica uses Instagram to collaborate with photographers who are also mums. She sends them a floral letter in the colour scheme of their choice in return for professional photographs of the product in a nursery setting or with their child. Jessica has plans to target the wedding market by collaborating with photographers who are brides or work in the industry.
