Brrrrrr… Check Out Dyson’s Pure Hot+Cool Heater Fan

It’s chilly right now in Australia so anyone who doesn’t have a good heating system – and that’s a lot of us because we’re used to such long summers – need to invest some time working out how they’re going to do to keep warm over the next few months (yes, we do have a short winter!)

So Dyson’s Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan is one of the first cabs off the rank. Many of us have a soft spot for Dyson. When you think about it – how did we ever get by lugging around those heavy vacuum cleaners with cords that got caught everywhere before Dyson came out with their cordless vacuums?

So the question now is, with Dyson’s background as an innovator and technology guru in the home, are they achieving the same status in the heating/cooling/purifying area of the market? To find out, we tried out the Pure Hot+Cool device which heats you in winter, cools you in summer and purifies your indoor air all year round.

The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heats your indoor air
and at the same time, purifies it.

There are plenty of good heaters around so what makes this one special?

Launched earlier last year, Dyson invested 28 million pounds on new test labs, engineering research and development, prototypes and connectivity research to develop the Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan.

So one of the first bonuses is, it’s not just a heater. As well as heating up large rooms evenly (with new technology which can do this) it can cool them down just as well in summer. But the real lynch pin is the fact this device will purify your indoor air all year. So instead of requiring three devices to heat, cool and purify your air – you can get it all in one device.

Dyson says the device uses Air Multiplier technology to automatically detects airborne particles and gases and simultaneously reports to the LCD screen and Dyson Link app in real time. This gives you a reading on the device’s LCD screen and on your Dyson App which is linked to it, so you know what the air quality is like in your home. This is pretty amazing because until now, if you wanted to know that, you would have had to do some fairly thorough testing.

Dyson’s Pure Hot+Cool Purifying fan gives you a reading on its LCD screen with the levels of VOCs, Nitrogen Dioxide, mould and other pollutants in your home.

The device automatically senses the pollution, captures 99.95% of ultrafine pollutants, and projects purified and heated air throughout your whole room – evenly. Dyson says it’s the only purifying heater designed and tested to do this and I can’t think of any other devices which are capable of this for sure.

This device can help with our current health concerns

2020 has so far been a year of disastrous bush fires and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Both of these events are driving us to look at the air quality in our homes and a device like the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan could be helpful right now.

When the bush fires hit early in the year, a purifying device like this one would be good to use to remove the pollution from our indoor air. Now that COVID-19 is around, anyone with allergies or lung issues could possibly benefit from purifying their indoor air as well.

Dyson developed the Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan with health concerns in mind. They supplied us with some pretty stark facts about the quality of our indoor air:

  1. Every day we breathe in up to 9,000 litres of air.
  2. Most of us live indoors up to 90% of the time.
  3. There is pollution outside in our cities including pollutants like gases like NO2 and SO2 so if these come inside, they need to be filtered.
  4. There’s also a lot of indoor pollution produced from everyday activities in our home such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from hair spray and perfume, formaldehyde from foam furniture, dust and allergens from carpets and benzene from scented candles.
  5. We spend approximately one third of our lives in our bedroom but it can be a polluted place as well.
  6. The kitchen and living room can be polluted by VOCs from cleaning products, dander from household pets, gas hobs and other cooking processes release particulate matter, fumes and odours.
  7. As modern homes are becoming better sealed to comply with energy efficiency requirements, those pollutants can be trapped inside and air circulation can be compromised.
  8. Any damp areas in the home can contain mould and this can release mould spores into air which are toxic to us.

How did the Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan go?

When we trialled the device we found it can definitely heat up a large space quickly and evenly which is very important. You don’t get that over-heated feeling which often happens when you put a heater on high or you use an airconditioning system to heat an area.

We could set it on exactly the temperature which felt right and we could lower the fan speed once the room had been heated. As well, the fact we could check on our air quality was mind bending – the fan is able to give you readings for the humidity, mould levels, VOC levels and other pollutants in your environment.

This is something many people have been waiting for. Families with children who have asthma or allergies can check on the quality of the air in their homes and by using the device, they can keep changing their environment until they get the pollutants down which will be beneficial to all of those spending time in that area.

The fan also measures mould levels – an important health concern

Mould is another problem in the eastern seaboard of Australia because of the high levels of rainfall and moisture. Not only does the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan monitor the level of mould in your air, it also gives you a humidity reading and this is important because if you constantly have high levels of humidity, mould will grow and thrive.

So as a result of our trial, we feel this is a great new device on the market. The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan has a range of improvements compared to the previous generation of Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifier fans and these have improved the product.

While the device may be up in the higher price range when you compare this heater/fan with others on the market, you do have to keep in mind you’re getting an air purifier as well as a heating/cooling device. With the range of testing the device is capable of which can be of immense help your health, it makes this product a good investment. Plus you have to love the magnetised remote control – it simply sticks to the top of the device so no more problems finding it!

Some of the new improvements and features of this latest model of the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifier fan include:

Sensing: A new LCD shows the particles and gases the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heater is automatically sensing in real time using a unique Dyson algorithm.

Lasers measure and identify fine particles. Another sensor detects the amount of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), such as benzene and formaldehyde, and NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) present. Another sensor measures relative humidity and temperature.

Capturing: Dyson engineers have incorporated 60% more HEPA media into a taller and deeper HEPA filter, and they’ve introduced three times more activated carbon, which can absorb gases, odours, domestic fumes and VOCs.

Nine metres of a condensed and sealed borosilicate microfiber filter captures 99.95% of particle pollution as small as 0.1microns, including allergens, bacteria, pollen and mould spores. Activated carbon filters, which have been coated with Tris (Trishydroxymethylaminomethane) to increase their absorption efficiency, remove gases including NO2, formaldehyde and benzene.

Projecting: By expanding the degree of oscillation to 350⁰ degrees and using Air Multiplier Technology, the machine can project over 290 litres of purified air per second to every corner of the room.

Dyson engineers tested the machine using a moveable 3D rig fitted with velocity probes to measure air force at different levels within the room. Using this data, they made numerous iterations of the air apertures to make sure that the machine circulates the air effectively for whole and even room purification.

Heating: To deliver better heating performance, Dyson engineers optimise the air amplifier geometry to balance room mixing and tested 80 different heating configurations of the heating element to find the most suitable combination.

With thermostat heat control, the machine automatically keeps your room at the target temperature. The heating function will switch to stand-by mode once the target is reached and will switch back on once it senses a drop in the temperature.

Fan mode

The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heater features a unique new diffused airflow mode along with fan mode. To maintain airflow projection out the front of the machine, the baffle stays in place to deliver a powerful, frontward stream of purified air. This can cool you down in the summer while simultaneously purifying the room.

Diffused mode

In Diffused mode, a baffle in the amplifier moves to block the front aperture, diverting air through the rear of the annular loop at a 45⁰ angle. Because the aperture is wider, this creates a more diffused airflow, uses less energy, generates less noise and purification effectiveness is maintained.

Dyson Link app: Available for iOS and Android, the Dyson Link app enables you to track indoor and outdoor pollution, temperature and humidity levels. You can also use it to control your machine and see how many hours of filter life you have left.

The new machines come with full Over the Air Update Capability (OTA) – meaning Dyson product owners can continue to get the most advanced Dyson software even after purchasing the machine.

Tips for keeping your home healthy from a Dyson Air Quality Engineer

  1. Some of the VOCs found in our homes can come from the chemicals in cleaning products we use on kitchen surfaces, bathrooms and windows. Limonene is one of the compounds that makes cleaning products smell like citrus, but it can react with naturally-occurring ozone in the home to create Formaldehyde. Using natural cleaning products can help lower the amount of VOCs in your indoor air.
  2. Keep your carpets, hard floors, upholstery and surfaces free of dust and pet hair – most effectively by vacuuming. When you sit on the sofa or plump up a cushion, you might notice a dust cloud. This dust may remain in the air and can be breathed in, but vacuuming regularly is an easy way to decrease particulate pollution at home.
  3. Some of the things we might enjoy at home like flowers or scented candles can also be sources of indoor air pollution. Rather than avoiding them completely, try lighting candles only in moderation, ensuring that you ventilate the room, or use a purifier afterwards to help remove any remaining VOCs or particulate matter from the air.
  4. Be wary when letting in ‘fresh air’. If you live next to a busy road or train line, opening the window can allow outdoor pollution, gases like NO2 and SO2, into your home. Try not to leave the windows open for too long, or ideally head outside into the fresh air for a few minutes, rather than letting it into the home.
