Looking For A Romantic Fairytale With A Twist? Marry Me Has It All…

The new Hollywood movie, Marry Me, not only stars A-listers Jennifer Lopez AND Owen Wilson – it’s also packed with original songs from Jennifer Lopez and global Latin music star, Maluma.

The movie will be out in early February next year so we have a while to wait but Marry Me looks like it’s going to be one of the most-awaited movies of 2022. Sure – it does look like an unlikely romantic fairytale – with a twist – but who better than Lopez and Wilson to make something wacky like this work?

Lopez stars as musical superstar Kat Valdez and Owen Wilson plays Charlie Gilbert, a maths teacher. They’re total strangers and yet, by circumstance, they agree to marry each other. As unlikely a set up as this is – with these two playing the roles, we’re one step on the way with them already.

As you can see from the trailer released this week, Kat Valdez (Lopez) is in a relationship with another singer called Bastian (played by Maluma, making his feature-film debut). As Kat and Bastian’s hit single, Marry Me, climbs the charts, they’re about to be wed before an audience of their fans in a ceremony which will streamed across multiple platforms.

Divorced high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert (played by Wilson) has been dragged to the concert by his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman, HBO’s Big Little Lies) and his best friend (Sarah Silverman). When Kat learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has cheated on her with her assistant, she has a meltdown on stage, questioning love, truth and loyalty. As her gossamer world falls away, she locks eyes with a stranger — a face in the crowd.

Charlie is holding a sign which says ‘Marry Me’ and in one of those strange life moments, Kat chooses to marry him – she simply says “Yes.” What begins as an impulsive reaction evolves into an unexpected romance. But as forces conspire to separate them, the universal question arises: can two people from such different worlds bridge the gulf between them and build a place where they can live together?

Sure, this is an unlikely romance and it is another repeat of Hollywood’s ‘fairy tale’ story about two people from entirely different backgrounds trying to ‘find’ each other. But if the trailer’s anything to go by, this movie will be worth checking out.
