Footballer Sheldon Tweedie has had some impressive results building up his Youtube audience, so we asked him for his tips to become A Youtube Star. Here’s what he shared with Women Love Tech.
I’m not sure if you could call me a “star”, but I guess I’ve come a long way since I was excited to reach 100 subscribers. Now I have over 10,000 of them, and my videos often get 5,000 views.
A few weeks ago I was thrilled again when my all-time total views hit the one million mark.So here are a few things I did to get from there to here.
I read a book called Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk, and I’ve watched a lot of his videos. He was one of the early pioneers of YouTubing, and his message was clear – if you want to be a vlogger, then you need to vlog about something you are passionate about. In my case, football.
By Sheldon Tweedie, footballer.At first, I tried to mix up a few funny videos with football themes, but I started to get more momentum when I settled on a theme and a goal: “365 Days to Become a Professional Footballer”.
At that time I also decided to post a daily video, every single day. Somewhere around ten minutes each time, documenting my journey. The fact that it’s daily pulling people in, they have to come back every day to know what’s happening.
I got my first boost in numbers when I posted a video that commented on a controversy that was happening between a couple of other Football YouTubers. That seemed to make a lot of their supporters aware of my channel. So I guess engagement with trending topics is a good idea.
By Sheldon Tweedie, footballer.But the biggest surge in subscribers came from collaborating with another Football YouTuber who was much bigger than me. We started talking, liked what we were doing, met up in London, and made some videos together. He gave me some shout outs, and I did the same for him. I try to make my content interesting and positive every day.
A lot of my viewers seem to find that inspirational, but I’m not trying to be inspirational.
I just try to be me.
