Every day brings fresh reasons for Ted Lasso fans to believe in the coming of season 4. Now we learn that pre-production is confirmed with London shoots beginning in early 2025.
Back in July, I speculated that something had to be in the works because the industry bible IMDB listed neither Jason Sudeikis nor Brendan Hunt as doing anything of significance at all. Really? The very people who had created Apple TV+’s most watched show doing nothing at all? That confirmed in my mind, at least, that they were quietly writing season 4. (Something that wouldn’t get listed on IMDB)
Then last month, Deadline reported that Apple TV Plus had exercised contract options for several cast members: Hannah Waddingham, who plays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton; Brett Goldstein, who plays coach Roy Kent; and Jeremy Swift, who plays Richmond’s Director of Operations Leslie Higgins.
Now according to Sigmund Judge, a writer for MacStories and co-host of the Magic Rays of Light podcast, Season 4 is a done deal. “Ted Lasso S4 is set to begin pre-production in January,” he writes on X. According to my sources, the football drama is now confirmed to return next year with a fourth instalment, with London shoots beginning in early 2025!”
Although Apple TV is not confirming anything officially, any detective worth his fee might be drawing some obvious conclusions here.
On top of this, some of the other cast members seem to be hinting heavily at it too, like Juno Temple who plays the effervescent Keeley Jones. “I don’t know yet. I’ve heard that it sounds like it may be happening, so that’s really exciting,” she said at the Emmys.
“I think it would be really interesting to catch up with the characters and find out where their journeys go next. But I think it’s important that the journeys feel like a continued life. Especially for my character who I think has been a really interesting character for women. I want to see what the next chapter of her life is.”
Nick Mohammed who plays kitman-turned-coach Nate says he and the other cast members still talk about the show because it was so significant in their lives and acting careers. “I’ve never known a job like it,” he says. “No-one really prepares you for something going well. We all still talk about the show. We’re all so indebted to it. We’re so grateful. It has genuinely touched audiences. People get in contact about it all the time.”
Like all the actors in the show, he won’t say much: “I know there are rumblings about a season 4, but who knows. I’m here for it if there is. If season four is happening, then I’d love it.”
Meanwhile Jeremy Swift, aka Higgins, says it all in his recent Instagram post: “So let me just check the internet to see if there’s any news on Ted Lasso… just a minute…..La la la WHAAAAAAT?!!!!”
