The 20 series of smartphones is the second series from well-known TV-maker, TCL. Because these guys have the runs on the board for TVs, they know how to produce a good display screen with the sensitivity and clarity people are after in a smartphone – without the expensive price tag. Priced between $299 and $499, this series of smartphones gives users a lot of features for their money – including NXTVISION technology which allows you to stream your favourite shows in high definition.
There are three phones in the latest 20 series and all of them have NXTVISION 2.0 and this technology supports HDR10 video playback for streaming. As well, the 20 series smartphones are larger than the previous series so at TV series, documentaries and films on Netflix so you can keep up with what’s streaming and it’s still a quality picture. The difference is with the TCL 20 series, the phones are slightly larger with the TCL 20 5G at 6.67-inches – there’s enough screen to making your viewing work even easier when you’re on the go.
NXTVISION 2.0 is the latest generation of this technology and it’s designed to improve the video and image displays over what the earlier TCL 10 Series offered. This includes better SDR to HDR conversion, colour calibration and more eye safety features but from a user’s point of view, there’s definitely more clarity and definition to the video and image displays.
The higher end phone of the series – the TCL 20 5G – has 5G connectivity powered by an 8nm octa-core Snapdragon 690 5G chipset – but what does this mean really? Basically, it means you’ll have access to a higher bandwidth network and the phone automatically switches between 4G and 5G bands based on data usage to help further stretch the phone’s battery life. Overall, you’ll have more bandwidth and more power. But you don’t have to use the 5G connection if you don’t want to or your plan isn’t 5G yet.
The TCL 20 5G has some other new features as well, including a nifty button on the left side of the phone which goes straight to Google Assistant – so no more madly pressing the screen when you need to call someone or navigate somewhere in a hurry! Another handy feature is a tab on the right hand side of the phone which you can place your finger on to unlock the phone – a handy new feature.
So, when we add up the new features, extra screen size, 5G connectivity and NXTVISION 2.0, the TCL 20 5G and the 20 SE are both smartphones offering a lot of the money. With the previous series of TCL smartphones, some people raised the issue about the battery life of the phones not being large enough and even with the 20 series, we’d have to agree you do need to charge the phone overnight – every night, without fail. But that being said, this is the same for a lot of smartphones on the market and we’ve used the TCL 20 non-stop on some busy days and it’s lasted right through but definitely by the evening, it’s best to get the phone recharged.
The mid-range of the series – the TCL 20L+
The TCL 20L+ smartphone has the same high definition quad camera, NXTVISION 2.0, automatic adaptive brightness and is the first phone to receive Circular Polarisation Certification and Low Blue Light Certifications which allows you to see what you’re looking at on the phone, while wearing sunglasses. Included in the phone’s setup is a back-light selfie cam and Super Night mode, so people in a shot with low light are shown in the best possible light.
The TCL 20 SE has a 6.82-inch plus a nifty feature – the Smart Floating Window, which lets you browse the web or reply to messages while watching videos. The feature is triggered by swiping to the right or left corner and can be adjusted in size or move to anywhere on the display.
Like the TCL 20 5G, the TCL 20 SE has NXTVISION 2.0 for better streaming experiences and it has dual speaker design which means no speakers are blocked when the phone is being held in your hand. It also comes with On-The-Go reverse charging capability so it’s possible to top up the battery of a friend’s device or a smaller gadget.
The phone’s quad rear camera comes with AI-powered colour portrait and sky enhancement features, which will automatically detect the intended subjects and adjust the background for better shots. Plus, the new AI Object Eraser is capable of clearing out people or objects which are in the background.
