We could all see this day coming and now it has arrived. Disney has announced its upcoming Marvel movie, Black Widow, will be released in July on Disney+ at the same time as in cinemas.
Sure, other Disney movies including Mulan have gone straight to streaming but we assumed this was because of COVID. This time Disney has announced Cruella will go straight to streaming and cinemas in May but animated film, Luca, may skip cinemas entirely and go straight to Disney+ in June.
Black Widow will debut on Disney+ as a Premier Access title. This means it will cost you extra to watch it – possibly up to $34.99 per view in Australia, in addition to your monthly Disney+ subscription fee.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson and was originally scheduled to be released early last year but it’s been delayed many times because of COVID. The fact that Disney is announcing these major films will be simultaneously streamed and released in cinemas could be the bad news cinema lovers have been dreading.
When a movie franchise as major as Marvel has decided to take this action it’s very likely it will set a standard which other movie houses will follow, even when COVID is long gone.

It’s likely the huge success of Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was something Marvel took into account before it made these announcements. Disney announced this week that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was has been its most watched series premiere on Disney+ ever.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was the ‘most watched’ series premiere ever on Disney+
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, created by Marvel Studios, ranked as the most watched series premiere ever on Disney+ when it opened here last weekend. It was the most watched title overall for the same time period on a global basis.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier joins the premieres of Marvel Studios’ first live-action series, WandaVision, and the Season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian from Lucasfilm, as the three most-watched Disney+ Original series opening weekends to-date.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier.
The pair, who came together in the final moments of Avengers: Endgame, team up on a global adventure which tests their abilities—and their patience.
Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the six-episode series also stars Daniel Brühl as Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter and Wyatt Russell as John Walker.

World-first interactive documentary on SBS On Demand investigates the effects of Australia’s technology addiction
Face it, we’re all probably a slave to tech. Glued to our screens from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed, we’ve slipped into the grip of the Big Tech companies who have no intention of letting up to ensure we’re endlessly scrolling.
This interactive documentary on SBS invites us to go on a journey of enlightenment to discover how concerned we should be about our relationship with technology. It offers a personalised investigation into our own tech dependency through an interactive questionnaire built into the documentary.
Hosted by child psychiatrist Dr Kim Le, who has himself experienced gaming addiction, this first-of-its-kind experiment will stream on SBS On Demand from April 21st. It will guide users through the matrix of technology addiction, revealing the tricks used by Big Tech which draw us to their products. It will help us understand how we got here, and what we should do next.
This could be a wake-up call for those who’ve become victims of the lucrative attention economy. The documentary also explores the impact of technology on the next generation and the worrying trends within the classroom.
Kylie Bolton, SBS Commissioning Editor said: “Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives and most people would say they have a handle on their relationship with their smartphone – but do they really?
“We’ve commissioned the biggest national survey of its kind to find out just how bad Australia’s tech addiction is, and the negative impacts this is having on our kids and adolescents. The results are alarming. This is a must-watch for anyone with a smartphone, and the parents of children who own them.”
Commissioned by SBS and instigated by Joined Up and Closer Productions, the largest national survey of its kind was carried out by Dr Sharon Horwood, Senior Lecturer at Deakin University’s School of Psychology, to capture the extent of technology addiction in 2021.
Dr Kim Le, child psychiatrist and Are You Addicted to Technology host said, “As a psychiatrist working on the front line, I see the psychological effects of technology addiction on the brain every day. As someone who has experienced gaming addiction, I am fascinated by the Internet gaming world. It was a privilege to be part of this project because my aim is to help others enjoy gaming and technology in a healthy way.”
Are You Addicted to Technology? is a timely, radical and innovative documentary which will challenge us to reassess everything about our relationship with technology.
Are You Addicted to Technology? will stream on SBS On Demand (Available ONLY on iOS, TVOS, and iPad) from April 21st…
Kitty Flanagan’s absorbing ABC comedy is an anti-legal thriller
We’re used to Kitty Flanagan’s brand of humour and so her new ABC comedy is worth checking out. But there are no fast-talking lawyers at the offices of Gruber & Gruber.
Flanagan plays the role of Helen Tudor-Fisk and she’s not your typical lawyer at all. But that’s what Fisk is all about – it looks for the comedy in the daily life in a suburban law office above a coffee shop. And it works.
Created by Flanagan and Vincent Sheehan and written by Flanagan and her sister Penny Flanagan, the series co-stars Julia Zemiro, Marty Sheargold, Debra Lawrence and Aaron Chen.
Helen is a funny character and while the humour is not as hard-hitting as we’ve come to expect from someone like Flanagan, it is still entertaining in a new and inventive way.
With its brilliant cast, Fisk is a pleasurable half-hour comedy which is well worth checking out.
