Ahead of International Women’s Day, here are three ways women in tech can stay ahead in 2022, report by Kathy Chen, Vice President – Channel Asia Pacific and Japan, Citrix.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate all women across fields, irrespective of race, creed, or circumstance. It‘s an opportunity to reflect on everything we’ve achieved as well as pave the way to uplift and encourage each other to unlock our full potential.

Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed cultural shifts and dedicated efforts to empower women in the workplace. However, the reality is that there is still much work to be done in the technology industry to elevate women as leaders. In keeping with the theme of International Women’s Day 2022, it’s imperative, now more than ever, to #breakthebias and create a world driven by equality.

Time and again, we’ve witnessed women breaking stereotypes and pushing the boundaries, especially in male dominated industries like technology. However, the pandemic’s shadow looms as one of the biggest setbacks for gender equality we’ve seen in years. Today, we need to create a culture, economy, and work environment that supports and empowers women to achieve their goals. It’s time to normalise the fact that women can do anything they set their minds to.

But change, like always, begins with YOU!

I’ve put together some approaches and best practices to help guide women as we work to maximise career opportunities.

Never stop learning

One of the most appealing views of technology is that it’s always growing and providing newer opportunities. By having the freedom to choose their own path, women can help create an impact. We must focus on being the best version of ourselves and show the world what we are capable of. To mould a more promising career, upskilling is the need of the hour. We must never stop learning and today, technology has opened numerous opportunities to help understand and develop the skills that are needed. Long-term success requires forging new connections and leaning on them to grow.

Embrace change and growth

We must always push ourselves to take up challenges in the workplace. This will help us progress significantly in the industry while also maximising opportunities. We also need to seek out and develop strong relationships with mentors and sponsors who will assist us in stepping outside our comfort zones and empower us to develop a strong foundation for long-term success. I’m proud to work for an organisation like Citrix that provides innovation and tools to set us up for success. For example, technology like Desktop-as-a-Service enables us to work from anywhere and empowers productivity.

Inspire other women colleagues

We need to have each other’s backs! Throughout our lives, we have been taught to be competitive with one another and that only the best person wins. But the truth is that we achieve success when we uplift each other and facilitate an environment of collaboration. We must look for opportunities to help and support other women, whether they’re on our team or even in our network. Together, we will be able to break through the glass ceiling.

All in all, there will always be fresh possibilities to pursue leadership roles as technology evolves, but we must be provided with the necessary tools and support to succeed. Growing together both professionally and personally will help women make a lasting mark in an organisation as well as in society.

Looking ahead

Hopefully, as more women take on greater responsibilities and leadership positions, we’ll see transformation in the world of technology. If women believe in themselves and if organisations support us as, we’ll witness a whole new exciting era of evolved ideas, stronger organisational structures, and a stream of equal opportunities.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, now is the time to #BreakTheBias.
