The annual Transitions Film Festival focuses on showcasing feature and VR documentaries that focus on social and environmental challenges that we are facing. The aim is to spread the word and ultimately empower the audience to build a better future for the world. Ranging from climate change, social and technological innovation, health and wellness crises, and advancements in AI; 2020’s Transitions Film Festival is providing people with another inspiring lineup of films.
Set to take place from February 20 until March 6, 2020, the festival will open with The Great Green Wall which follows the Malian musician-activist Inna Modja and the project to grow an 8000km wall of trees to prevent desertification in Africa.
Other highlights throughout the festival include:
- My Year of Living Mindfully
- Convoy
- Mr. Toilet
- The Story of Plastic
Each of which raise different issues, ranging from mental clarity and mindfulness, damages to the environment, and health and wellness.
Throughout the duration of the festival, there will also be screenings of Australian-made films including:
- When the River Runs Dry
- The Wheels of Wonder
- 25 Zero
- Cryptopia
Some of these do bring up issues regarding the environment, an area that seems appropriate to delve into given the crises Australia as a country has been facing with the destructive fires. With that in mind, the theme of this year’s festival is ‘Resilience’, and their collaboration with Resilient Melbourne and The Resilience Shift will outline these issues via a series of films.
Everything from the environment to biodiversity, technology to health, wellness and psychology.

The festival comes to a close with Sanctuary, which follows Javier Bardem, his brother, and leaders of Greenpeace on their journey to creating the world’s largest marine sanctuary in the Antarctic Ocean.
The Transitions Film Festival runs from the 20th of February until the 6th of March at Cinema Nova, Loop Project Space & Bar and venues in Brunswick and St. Kilda
