During the pandemic, I was working from home and getting restless. I wanted to improve my photography skills and techniques. I set myself a simple photo challenge. Head to a local cafe and have a $5 coffee, then take 3 photos. I called my art project The Take 3 Photos Challenge.

Why the Take 3 Photos Challenge?
At the time, coffee cost only AUD$5, making it an affordable and delightful treat. Usually, I would take a photo of my cup of cappuccino. I decided three photos would make me look behind the obvious shot in front of me.
The extra two photos could include the shopfront. This is sometimes popular on Google Maps as it helps people find the location. I would look around and see what I could take a third photo of that would either help people or be an unusual feature. Perhaps it was an old building, so I’d look for interesting architectural details.

Local Guides for Google Maps
Then I added the photos as a Local Guide to Google Maps. It’s part art project and part documenting history. It took dedication and persistence to reach the highest level, Level 10.
You’ll receive points depending on whether you answer a question, add a photo or leave a review. As you help others, you will earn points for each contribution and move closer to the next level.
Today I’m sitting on 17,664 photos with 798 reactions and 127,343,492 views. It’s hard to believe 146 million views in total. I’m aiming for 250 million views. Sometimes this goal seems impossible, but it does grow exponentially.
Sometimes I add the photos to social media, but my favourite platforms have moved from Instagram over to TikTok and X. I may give them all up if the under-16 age restrictions laws come into force in Australia. Perhaps I’ll move on over to the lesser-known apps and stay one step ahead of this censorship baloney. Or I might give up on all social media and delete my digital footprint.

Has my photography improved?
I’ve continued my “Take 3 Photos Challenge” for several years. Sometimes I take one photo, and sometimes I take more. Occasionally, I try to take the gritty side of life and show how life in Australia really is. It’s not always sunshine and sipping martinis on the beach.
Photography is subjective, so it doesn’t bother me if you don’t like my photos. I’m not doing it for popularity, awards or innovation. I’d like to think my shots have improved somewhat, but I still have room to improve.
Sometimes it’s the photos of a dish online (from other people) that seal the deal on where we decide to have lunch. Local businesses often leave a genuine thank-you comment.
The unexpected benefit from the “three photo challenge” is slowing down and looking up from my phone. It’s become a mindful exercise. What does the coffee taste like? What can I smell? How do I feel? What’s interesting about this place?
I’d love to see your photos on social media. Please mention the phrase Take 3 Photos Challenge.
