Adele can’t seem to help being in the news this week and along with all the other stories, Spotify has announced it has changed the default way people listen to albums on the platform after a well-known artist – yes, we’re talking about Adele – asked for it.
The change was put into place on Spotify over the weekend and it means that when you play an album now from cover to cover, instead of the way Spotify used to shuffle the album when you hit play to various songs on the album, now the album plays from track one to the last track – as it was recorded and planned by the artist.
When the change came in on the platform, Adele tweeted her thanks, saying she’s been pushing for this change for a long time. “This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry!” she wrote on Twitter. “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening.”
In days gone by, we listened to albums on CD and it’s fairly hard to shuffle tracks on a CD. So now on Spotify, the default setting plays albums the way they’re meant to be listened to. But if you want to set up a different order, you’ll be able to do that as well because the shuffle option is still available. All you have to do is select shuffle once you’re playing your chosen album.
“For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the shuffle toggle,” a Spotify spokesperson told the media.
So it’s up to you to listen to your new albums the way you choose to but the default option will be as the recording artist originally arranged them. And congratulations to Adele for pushing for a change which no doubt, many musical artists will be happy about.
