Overview

The Amazon Echo Hub is the latest addition to Amazon’s extensive lineup of smart home devices. Designed to centralise and streamline smart home management, the Echo Hub offers a comprehensive and user-friendly interface for controlling various connected devices. Its integration capabilities, particularly with the Ring Doorbell Plus, make it a standout choice for those looking to enhance their home security and automation.

Setup

I was disappointed in the device setup to have to enter my Amazon username and password. We are encouraged to have long and complicated passwords, so having the enter my details via the one screen keyboard was, well, long and complicated. Same for the Wi-Fi details. I’m sure there is an easier way.

Design and Build

The Echo Hub features a sleek, modern design that fits well in any home decor. Its compact size ensures it can be placed conveniently on a table, shelf, or mounted on a wall. The touch screen is responsive, with a clear and intuitive interface that simplifies navigation and control of connected devices. Helpfully included in the packaging is facilities to mount on a wall.

Key Features

  1. Centralised Control: The Echo Hub acts as a central control panel for all your smart home devices. From lights and thermostats to cameras and locks, everything can be managed from one place and by your voice.
  2. Voice Assistant: With Alexa built-in, the Echo Hub allows for hands-free operation of devices, quick access to information, and control over your smart home setup via voice commands. Great for using as a Kitchen Timer (“Hey Alexa, set timer 5 minutes”) or Trivia reference (Hey Alexa, “How old is Matthew McConaughey”).
  3. Automation and Routines: The Hub supports creating and managing routines and automation, enabling devices to work together seamlessly based on your preferences and schedules.
  4. Touchscreen Interface: The touchscreen interface provides an alternative to voice control, offering detailed control and monitoring capabilities with visual feedback.
  5. Proximity Sensing: Echo Hub knows when you are close by and displays a custom menu so you can readily access tools and features.

Integration with Ring Doorbell Plus

The integration between the Amazon Echo Hub and the Ring Doorbell Plus is one of the highlights of this review. Here’s how they work together to enhance home security:

  1. Instant Alerts: When someone rings your Ring Doorbell Plus, the Echo Hub instantly notifies you. This immediate alert system ensures you never miss a visitor or a delivery.
  2. Live Video Feed: The Echo Hub can display a live video feed from the Ring Doorbell Plus, allowing you to see and communicate with visitors directly from the Hub. This feature is particularly useful for quickly identifying who is at your door without needing to open a separate app.
  3. Two-Way Communication: The integration supports two-way audio, enabling you to talk to visitors through the Echo Hub. This is perfect for interacting with delivery personnel or guests when you’re busy or away from home.
  4. Enhanced Security: The seamless integration enhances overall home security by combining the Ring Doorbell Plus’s surveillance capabilities with the Echo Hub’s centralised control and alert system. You can monitor and manage your home’s security more efficiently.

Performance

The Echo Hub performs exceptionally well in daily use. The touch screen is responsive, the voice recognition is surprisingly accurate, and the device integrates smoothly with a wide range of smart home products. The quick and reliable connection with the Ring Doorbell Plus ensures that you are always aware of who is at your door.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Centralised control for all smart home devices
  • Seamless integration with Ring Doorbell Plus (and myriad of other devices)
  • Responsive touchscreen and accurate voice recognition
  • Stylish and compact design
  • Relatively easy setup and user-friendly interface

Cons:

  • Slightly higher price point compared to basic smart displays
  • Limited compatibility with some lesser-known smart home brands
  • Setup and integration are not as simple or seamless as could be

Conclusion

The Amazon Echo Hub is a robust and efficient device for anyone looking to enhance their smart home experience. Its integration with the Ring Doorbell Plus makes it particularly appealing for those prioritising home security. While it comes at a slightly higher price point, the features and convenience it offers justify the investment. Whether you’re a smart home enthusiast or a newcomer, the Echo Hub is a valuable addition to your home setup.
