The (male-dominated) construction industry has remained largely unchanged for decades. However, an innovative new app is transforming how Australians build their homes. Build Buddy, is a groundbreaking platform that empowers everyday individuals to design, approve, and construct their dream homes without the need for a traditional builder. With intelligent algorithms and a user-friendly interface, Build Buddy is making it more accessible than ever for individuals to build their own home. Including Haneesha Nimmagadda.Â
The Build Buddy basics
Build Buddy is a collaborative construction platform that enables users to take control of their home building journey. By connecting homeowners with verified consultants, contractors, and suppliers, the platform eliminates the layers of management that typically complicate the construction process. Users can access real-time updates, schedules, and plans, ensuring that everyone involved is on the same page. The result? A streamlined construction timeline that enhances communication and reduces inefficiencies.
Democratising construction
Haneesha Nimmagadda, a Cloud Account Executive at Salesforce, is one of the first users of Build Buddy. With previous experience in building her parents’ custom home in New Zealand and owning multiple properties, she was familiar with the intricacies of construction. However, the decision to build her family’s new home presented unique challenges. Rising costs, builders going bust, and concerns over quality were at the forefront of her mind.
Haneesha first learned about Build Buddy at the Sydney Home Show. “We had just got our DA approved and were looking at how we were going to build within our budget,” she explained. Drawn to the app’s promise of simplifying the process, she eagerly joined the pilot group.
Overcoming challenges
For Haneesha, the motivation to use Build Buddy stemmed from both inspiration and necessity. “We knew we wanted a custom build,” she said. The idea of owner-building initially felt daunting, especially considering her lack of experience in navigating the construction landscape. However, Build Buddy broke down the process into manageable tasks, providing expert guidance along the way.
“Estimating costs was one of the biggest challenges,” Haneesha noted. The app’s structured approach helped her stay within budget by providing clear guidance on what needed to be done at each stage. With a dedicated Construction Buddy – a licensed professional overseeing on-site matters – she felt reassured about maintaining quality standards.
Significant savings
One of the standout features of Build Buddy is its cost-saving potential. By avoiding traditional builder margins, Haneesha anticipates saving around $200,000 compared to quotes she received from conventional builders. The platform also offers access to wholesale pricing on a variety of construction materials, further enhancing affordability.
Reflecting on her financial planning, she stated, “I have a clear idea of the different trades involved. And, the platform enables me to get multiple quotes and select the right vendor for me.” This level of transparency in budgeting and vendor selection was a game-changer for her.
Building confidence
As Haneesha’s journey progresses – she is currently approaching the slab stage – she feels more empowered and knowledgeable about the construction industry. The ability to communicate directly with tradespeople through the app’s messaging system has been invaluable. “I can quick chat and ask questions, ensuring I have one system of record,” she explained.
The prebuilt scope of works for each job offered by Build Buddy has also helped her navigate the complexities of construction. And, provided reassurance that important details were not overlooked.
Firm foundations for the future
Build Buddy’s innovative approach has not only transformed Haneesha’s experience but also holds the potential to change the entire home building landscape in Australia. With plans for a nationwide rollout in 2025, the app aims to make building more accessible for families across the country.
Danny Assabgy, the founder of Build Buddy, emphasises that the platform is more than just a construction tool. It’s about fostering collaboration among homeowners, contractors, and suppliers. “Our goal is to create a transparent and empowering experience that allows homeowners to build the homes they’ve always dreamed of, with confidence and support,” he stated.
In a time when the construction industry faces numerous challenges, Build Buddy is enabling individuals like Haneesha to take charge of their home-building journey. And, serves as an inspiring example of how technology can empower ordinary Australians to achieve their dreams (homes).
