Tech That Connects: How Cricut Sparks Creativity and Entrepreneurship for Families

Last week, I attended the 2025 Cricut Christmas Makers Event in Sydney, hosted by Closer Communications, and left feeling inspired – and a little less embarrassed about mispronouncing Cricut as “cry-cut” instead of “cricket” my whole life. The event wasn’t just about demonstrating Cricut’s innovative machines; it was a delightful afternoon of crafting, connection, and creativity and I felt like a was truly amongst my crafty tribe.

A first time Cricut experience

As a new user, I was blown away by the creative and entrepreneurial possibilities that Cricut machines unlock. From the precision of layered transfers to the oddly satisfying process of “weeding” (the delicate removal of excess vinyl), the capabilities of these machines are extraordinary.

At the event, I got hands-on with a Cricut heat press - which I’d explored as an option for printing t-shirts a while back –  to create professional-quality ceramic coasters.

I’ve already made the call to make the shift to thoughtful, home-made gifts over mass produced online buys, but seeing how many more possibilities I’d have with a Cricut in my corner had me positively vibrating with custom-gifting-excitement.

But the Cricut isn’t just about personalising gifts – it’s a game-changer for anyone looking to start a creative side hustle. Think custom t-shirts, intricate designs for wedding decor, or even unique stickers for small businesses. Nicola shared stories of creators who have turned their Cricut creations into thriving online stores. For a busy mum like me, this got the entrepreneurial wheels turning.

Connection through creativity

One of the most surprising takeaways from the event was how much these machines foster connection. As someone passionate about family tech that brings people together, I couldn’t help but imagine my kids bonding over a Cricut project. Whether designing their own custom notebooks or experimenting with DIY stickers for school projects, it’s a tool that encourages collaboration, imagination, and quality time.

At home, tech can often feel isolating, with everyone glued to their own screen. Cricut flips that narrative, transforming devices into tools for shared creative experiences. In fact, the event inspired me to add a Cricut machine to my Christmas shopping list for our family. My son, who’s always dreaming up ways to earn extra pocket money, could even use it to make and sell custom creations – a perfect tie-in for discussions on my Side Hustle & Son podcast about sparking entrepreneurial thinking in kids.

If you’ve ever considered purchasing a Cricut machine, today’s Cyber Monday sales present the perfect opportunity. These tools are an investment, but the long-term potential – from personalised gifts to starting your own side hustle – makes them worth every cent. Plus, the Cricut community is endlessly passionate, continually releasing tutorials and project ideas to keep you inspired, no matter your skill level.

A brand that connects

Nicola Dow Smith, the Regional Director of Cricut Australia is someone who is so incredibly passionate about the brand she represents, it’s easy to see why Aussies have been guzzling the Cricut Creator Coolaid as we seek ways to beautify and professionalise their homes, lives and businesses.

After spending an afternoon immersed in the Cricut community, I came away impressed by more than just the technology. The brand’s commitment to empowering creators, from beginners to seasoned pros, is palpable. Attending this event made me feel more connected not only to the product but also to the creative possibilities it represents.

As I plan my next article in this series about “Big Tech Buys for the Family This Christmas,” the Cricut is firmly on my radar. I’m eager to get my hands on a unit to do a proper review and explore how it fits into family life, creativity, and even small business ventures.

Watch this space. It’s going to be one of those ‘property of Bart Simpson’ phases (IYKYK)

For now, I’ll leave you with this: If you’re looking for a gift that brings people together, inspires creativity, and even offers entrepreneurial opportunities, the Cricut might just be your new favourite holiday investment.

And who knows? By this time next year, I might be running my own side hustle, personalising ceramic coasters and helping others embrace their creative side. One thing’s for sure: I won’t be calling it a “cry-cut” anymore!

Stay tuned for more tech reviews, creative ideas, and entrepreneurial tips – and don’t forget to check out the Cyber Monday deals. Happy crafting!
