Are you the kind of person who eats at your desk and leaves finger marks all over your smartphone? In my last workplace, we were encouraged to deep clean our desks once a week. It’s amazing how much dust can pile up during that short time frame. Here are some great ideas on cleaning your computer, desk area and mobile phone:
How to Clean your Paperwork
I’m not the best at keeping a clean desk. I’m a visual person, so I tend to collect stickies and notes on my desk. I write my to-do list daily on paper, so these can sometimes accumulate.
How to clean your desk
File away any paperwork that might have gathered on your desk. Transfer any items to your online to-do list and place them in a folder. Wipe down any surfaces and place any pens or stationery back where they belong.
How to clean your monitor
Use a microphone cloth and a screen cleaner. You’ll need to turn your computer monitor off and make sure it’s cold before cleaning. First use a dry microfibre cloth to remove any dush from the surface of your monitor. You can wash these and reuse them. I like to soak them in water, but you can throw them in the washing machine on hot water (60 degrees). Do not use fabric softener or bleach, and hang out to dry.
How to clean your keyboard
Keyboards are a tricky one to clean with all of the nooks. If you have a keycap remover then use it to take off the keys. If you have removed the keycaps, just wash them in some warm water and dishwashing liquid.
You can buy a cleaning goo that is slightly sticky and collects dust and food crumbs. It’s effective, but really only suitable for one-time use. As a result, it is a little on the expensive side to do regularly.
Microfibre towels are great for a general wipe over. Avoid using a vacuum cleaner, as this will introduce static electricity. I’ve tried spray cans of compressed air, but I find these ineffective.
How to clean your mouse pad
I gave up using a mouse pad many, many years ago. But I’ve seen people clean their mouse pad in the bathtub. Just use water and dish soap with a sponge. Do not place your mouse pad in a washing machine.
How to clean your mobile phone
Did you know your mobile phone is 10 times dirtier than a public toilet seat?
As I’m regularly taking photos of food, my mobile phone tends to get dirty fairly quickly. In the past I used a glass cleaner, but I have switched to Whoosh screen shine. It’s safe for all screens. It is non-toxic, ammonia ad alcohol free.
I like Whoosh. Grab a bottle to store in your top desk drawer and matching screen cloths and you’ll be set.
