Instagram’s 2018 Year In Review Global and Trends

In 2018, Australians came together on Instagram to creatively express themselves and get closer to the people and things they love.

The data reveals how Aussies are interacting on Instagram, including the top five Australian accounts on the platform, top posts by an Aussie, top geotagged locations nationwide, top geotagged locations in each state and top geotagged beaches.

Global data was also released showing trends such as the Most Used Face Filter in Instagram Stories and number of times was used in comments.

Instagram’s 2018 Year in Review around the world:

  • Most Used Face Filter in Instagram Stories: Heart Eyes
  • Most Used Giphy Sticker on Instagram Stories: Heart Love Sticker by Arata
  • Number of times was used in comments: 14 billion
  • Happiest Geotagged Location in the World (highest use of  in the caption): Disneyland TokyoTop Niche Community Trend: ASMR
  • Highest Growth Hashtag Community: #fortnite
  • Top Fandom Community: BTS (#btsarmy)
  • Top Dance Movement: #inmyfeelingschallenge
  • Top Advocacy Hashtags: #metoo (1.5 million), #timesup (597K), #marchforourlives (562K)

 Naomi Shepherd, Group Industry Director at Facebook and Instagram, said:

“Love is in the air on Instagram this year, with our global community sharing the heart emoji 14 billion times in comments, and choosing the heart-eyes as the most popular face filter in 2018.

“In Australia, #love was our most-used hashtag, reaffirming Instagram as a place to express yourself and get closer to the people and things you care about. Other top performers on a local level include Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, which ranked as the top tagged location in the country and Chris Hemsworth who has been named as the most-loved Aussie on Instagram this year.”
