The 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy nominations are officially in for 2021 and Disney is leading the charge with 146 nominations, closely followed by streaming giant Netflix with 129 nominations, while Warner Media — which owns HBO and HBO Max came in with 138 nominations thanks to having the two platforms. The Australian streaming platform – Binge – came in with 33 nominations.

Individual shows with loads of nominations include Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian which came in with 24 nominations each, followed very closely by Disney+’s WandaVision which scored 23 nominations. But we shouldn’t leave out The Handmaid’s Tale which scored 21 nominations. As well, Saturday Nigh Live received 21 nominations and Apple TV’s Ted Lasso scored 20 – this comedy series broke records by being the most nominated comedy series this year.

In good news, artists of colour made up almost half of the total nominations across the categories. Michaela Coel, Mi Rodriguez, Rosie Perez, Bowen Yang and Kristen Anderson Lopez are some of the non-white performers who were recognised for their stellar performances.

As well, Rodriguez’s nomination for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in Pose is historic because it’s the first time a trans woman has ever been nominated in the leading actress category.

In Australia, Executive Director of the Binge streaming platform, Alison Hurbert-Burns, said: “There are so many incredible stories among those nominated on Binge including I May Destroy You, which asks society to question the meaning of consent in contemporary life. We saw Kate Winslet like never before as a small-town detective in the unmissable crime series, Mare of Easttown. And Kaley Cuoco stepped into the limelight with her starring role in The Flight Attendant, which has been renewed for a second season.”

Even Friends: The Reunion special, received four nominations including one for Outstanding Pre-recorded Variety Special Category which gives direct recognition to Courteney Cox. The Friends reunion also was nominated for production design and lighting design/direction for a variety special and outstanding variety special.
