Musketeers, pop music bands (anyone heard of Destiny’s Child), and gold/silver/bronze Olympic medals: all good things come in three. Including the number of folds in the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first-ever triple-foldable phone. Smart, stylish and super versatile, here are all the ways that this new smartphone is more than just a triple threat…

Welcome to the fold

When it comes to trends in tech, foldable phones are having a fashionable moment. However, Huawei is taking the concept to the next level, by delivering a phone that folds not just once but twice – essentially giving you three screens in one. Its new Mate XT Ultimate Design is a smartphone engineered with a revolutionary dual-hinge system that allows for both inward and outward folding.

The Mate XT’s OLED touchscreen, when fully unfolded, stretches out to a 10.2-inch display with a screen ratio of 16:11 and an impressive 3,000-pixel resolution. This transforms the phone into a near-tablet experience, perfect for everything from watching movies to reading magazines. With the option to use it in single, dual, or triple-screen mode, the Mate XT gives users more flexibility than any other foldable on the market today.

Form, function and foldability

The key to the Mate XT’s engineering marvel lies in its intricate hinge system. Huawei has developed a design with 26 precision cams that make folding and unfolding smooth and seamless. These dual hinges give the phone its ability to fold in two directions, making it a first-of-its-kind commercial product. When fully folded, the phone measures only 12.8 millimeters thick – just slightly thicker than a regular smartphone. When completely unfolded, it’s a slim 3.6 millimetres, delivering a larger display without adding bulk.

One of the best features of the Mate XT is its automatic screen mode switching. Depending on how you fold or unfold the device, it will automatically adjust to single, dual, or triple-screen configurations. When fully opened, the expansive display mimics a tablet, perfect for reading e-books, editing documents, or multitasking across various apps. When folded, it works just like a regular smartphone, making it easy to transition between a larger workspace and a more pocket-friendly form.

A foldable phone that doesn’t forsake fabulousness

Huawei hasn’t just delivered on functionality. The Mate XT Ultimate Design also screams luxury. As part of the brand’s high-end Ultimate Design line, the phone is wrapped in premium red or black leather with accents of gold along the metallic components. The team at Huawei also designed the Ultimate Design logo in gold to match the sophisticated layered steel construction visible along the phone’s edges and around its cameras. This phone isn’t just about cutting-edge smart technology; it’s about making a stylish statement.

Why the flip do you need a triple-fold phone?

Why fold twice when once is enough? According to Huawei, the Mate XT Ultimate Design was made for users who want versatility in every moment. Whether you’re streaming videos, editing work files, or using it as a traditional phone, the triple-screen mode gives you more control over how you use your device. It’s like having a phone, a tablet, and a mini-laptop all in one compact gadget.

The device boasts four built-in cameras, ensuring you can capture high-quality photos and videos, no matter which mode you’re in. The main camera features a triple setup: a 50 MP wide lens, a 12 MP periscope telephoto lens with 5.5x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultrawide lens. The selfie camera also delivers quality with its 8 MP capability. So, whether you’re out and about, in a business meeting, or lounging at home, the Mate XT offers a solution for every situation.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is currently only available in China, so Aussie fans of foldable smartphones will have to wait to get their hands on this piece of tech innovation.
