Dr Cathy Foley, Australia’s former Chief Scientist, has been named as the national recipient of the Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership.

She has been a transformative force in the tech industry, breaking new ground for young women seeking to carve out their space in STEM. As a distinguished physicist and a passionate advocate for gender equity, her influence over the years has not only pushed the boundaries of scientific innovation but has also paved the way for future generations of women in technology.

Her remarkable journey began in the realm of superconductors and sensor technologies, where she developed the revolutionary LANDTEM sensor system. This groundbreaking tool, capable of detecting valuable mineral deposits underground, solidified her role as a leading figure in applied science. This accomplishment was just the beginning of her impactful career.

In 2021, Dr Foley ascended to the position of Australia’s ninth Chief Scientist, becoming only the second woman ever to hold this prestigious role. Throughout her tenure, she fervently supported advancements in critical technologies and climate solutions, all while championing STEM equity. Her leadership was characterized by a relentless drive to dismantle systemic barriers that have long hindered women’s progress in the sciences.

Despite the numerous initiatives aimed at improving gender diversity in STEM, Dr Foley remains candid about ongoing challenges. “We are still gendered in most careers, even for STEM,” she says. “While we have lots of girls and women doing the life sciences, they have insecure work and don’t get promoted. In the physical sciences, we have a pipeline issue where girls don’t choose high-level maths and physics, so there are few women. Even after decades of effort and initiatives, we are not there yet. There is still work to do.”

Her commitment to change is reflected in her numerous leadership roles and accolades. In 2020, she was elected to the Australian Academy of Science, and she has received an Order of Australia for her service to research science and the advancement of women in physics. Moreover, her dedication extends beyond her professional career. She has served as a Joey Scout leader for over 20 years and was recently appointed Vice President of Scouts Australia, exemplifying her commitment to inspiring future generations.

As Dr Foley prepares to receive her latest honour at the Australian Women’s Leadership Symposium in Adelaide on May 16, 2025, her legacy continues to resonate within the STEM community. Her story is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when expertise, advocacy, and leadership intersect. Her impact on the tech industry is profound, particularly in her unwavering support for young women, ensuring they too can make their mark on the world. Dr Cathy Foley’s contributions have not only revolutionised scientific discovery but have also uplifted countless individuals, especially women and underrepresented groups in tech. Her legacy is one of breaking barriers and paving the way for future leaders in STEM

Dr Foley will receive her award as the national recipient of the Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership at the Australian Women’s Leadership Symposium in Adelaide on May 16, 2025.
