With the cost of living keeping many of us on our toes, the price of protecting our smartphones has progressively risen. In fact, new research reveals that collectively, we’ve shelled out a staggering $735 million in the past year alone on repairing our smartphones. This significant expenditure comes amidst a broader economic backdrop of rising inflation and cost of living pressures, amplifying digital anxiety among consumers who dread the financial hit of a phone repair.

Breaking budgets … and smartphones

The statistics are striking. According to research conducted by phone accessories brand Casetify, 56% of Gen Zers report dropping their phones 3-4 times per week. This frequent fumbling is not just a youthful habit; it’s a costly one. More alarmingly, over half (59%) of those who drop their phones more than five times a week are women, highlighting a demographic trend in smartphone mishaps.

The worst screen smashers by state

Digging deeper into the data reveals stark differences across Australia. New South Wales leads the pack, with residents spending a staggering $219 million over the past year on phone repairs. Queensland isn’t far behind, with expenditures totaling $186 million, followed closely by Victoria at $182 million. In contrast, Western Australia spent $63 million, reflecting a significant disparity in repair costs among states.

How to protect your precious smartphone

Given the hefty price tags associated with smartphone repairs, protecting your device becomes paramount. Here are some proactive steps you can take to safeguard your tech investment:

1. Invest in a quality phone case. A sturdy, shock-absorbent phone case can significantly reduce the impact of drops and falls. Casetify has made it easier than ever with the release of their new plant based, military grade protection called EcoShock.

2. Apply a screen protector. A tempered glass screen protector adds an extra layer of defense against scratches and cracks.

3. Use a lanyard or wrist Strap. Prevent accidental drops by attaching your phone to your wrist or bag with a lanyard.

4. Be mindful of where you place your phone. Avoid placing your phone on unstable surfaces or near edges where it could easily slip off.

5. Consider phone insurance. Evaluate whether phone insurance coverage is a cost-effective option for your needs, particularly if you have a history of frequent phone accidents.
