There’s a particular pleasure in unboxing a device that feels less like tech and more like a beautiful object you want to carry everywhere. The new Kindle Scribe arrived at my door with its premium leather protective case in my favourite caramel colour, and I’ll admit I spent the first few minutes simply turning it over in my hands. The leather is soft and warm, the kind of finish you’d expect on a designer notebook rather than an e-reader, and it sets the tone for everything the Scribe Colorsoft is trying to be: a considered, luxurious space for your thoughts.
And that’s precisely what won me over. Because there is nothing quite like a blank page to make you want to fill it. The big screen debate in our house
I love the bigger screen. For reading, writing and annotating, the extra real estate is a joy — maps, illustrations and my own scrawled margin notes all have room to breathe. My husband, however, remains loyal to his smaller Kindle, which slips neatly into his hands and suits his read-anywhere habits. It’s become a running debate in our house, and honestly, both of us are right. But for anyone who wants to create as well as consume, the larger format wins hands down.

The timing is telling. New research commissioned by Amazon reveals that while 76 per cent of Australians have set professional or personal goals, 37 per cent admit they’ve made little to no real progress in the past year which is an “aspiration gap” between what we want to accomplish and what we actually do. The culprits are familiar: difficulty staying focused, too many distractions, and a lack of clear planning.
Strikingly, 58 per cent of us frequently forget ideas because we can’t capture them in time, and 92 per cent of working Australians say their creativity or ability to think deeply is limited when working on a device with constant internet access. What I’ve been reading
The Scribe is, of course, still a Kindle at heart, and mine has been getting a workout. I’ve been travelling through South America with Michael Palin’s Brazil — his warmth and curiosity make him the ideal travel companion on the page. And with Christopher Nolan’s epic film adaptation now on the big screen, I’ve returned to Homer’s The Odyssey, which feels made for the Scribe: a classic you want to annotate, question and scribble over as you go. Reading with a pen in hand changes the experience entirely.
Bigger is better — and not just for Kindles
It’s fascinating to watch how the Kindle has graduated in size over the years, from those early pocket-sized readers to today’s expansive Scribe. Mobiles have travelled the same road — remember when phones were shrinking? Samsung and friends reversed that trend years ago, and screens have been growing ever since, right up to foldables that open out like a book. Even our cars have followed suit: the streets are full of SUVs where the little runabouts of yesteryear once parked. We want more space — on our roads, in our hands and, it turns out, on our pages.
For the travellers and the journallers
