Most major partnerships start with a long history of corporate deals – years of working together on resources, infrastructure or other big projects. This one started differently. A small, female-founded Australian science company had already done something no one had done before: created a national regulatory pathway that didn’t exist, then proved it could work
Longevity Life Sciences, co-founded by CEO Sally Panton (main image, right, with Longevity Life Sciences co-founders Lucy Canny), has entered a multi-year, multi-compound strategic partnership with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, one of Japan’s most established manufacturers of pharmaceutical-grade molecular compounds. The deal will bring a pipeline of MGC-manufactured cellular health ingredients into the Australian market through LLS’s proprietary CellVive platform, starting with MGC’s globally recognised BioPQQ, a naturally occurring antioxidant compound linked to cellular energy, brain health and the growth of new mitochondria.
To understand why a company of MGC’s size chose to back LLS, it helps to look at what Panton and her team had already achieved. LLS spearheaded the regulatory work that made Australia the first country in the world to establish a national therapeutic goods pathway for Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, better known as NMN.
That is not a small administrative footnote; it’s the kind of groundwork that typically takes government agencies, industry bodies and years of advocacy to land, and it’s what gave MGC the confidence that Australia’s regulatory system, and LLS’s ability to navigate it, could support a genuinely commercial pipeline. Since that determination came through, Australians have bought more than 2.4 million products containing CellVive NMN. BioPQQ could become the second compound to follow that same pathway and, if successful, become the first PQQ ingredient available for use in Listed Medicines in Australia.
For Panton, the partnership validates a bet she made years ago: that Australia’s regulatory credibility could provide the foundation for something much bigger than a domestic supplement brand. “Mitsubishi Gas Chemical is globally recognised for the quality, consistency and scientific rigour of its manufacturing, and we’re proud to be partnering with them in Australia,” she says. “For a business of our size, a multi-year strategic partnership with a company of MGC’s standing is a significant milestone. It reflects the strength of the platform we are building and the opportunity both companies see in the global cellular health market.”
Her focus, though, stays firmly on the customer at the other end of every bottle. “Consumers are increasingly interested in emerging longevity science, but they also want confidence in what they are buying and consuming,” Panton says. “We focus on a supply chain built on scientific evidence, traceability, consistent manufacturing and compliance with the regulatory requirements of each market.” That emphasis on traceability matters in a supplement category that has, historically, struggled with exactly that kind of consumer trust.
The opportunity ahead is sizeable. Australia’s complementary medicines market is worth roughly $6.3 billion, and around three-quarters of Australians use complementary medicines in some form. Globally, the longevity supplements market is worth approximately US$28.6 billion, and analysts forecast it will nearly double by 2034. For a company built by two women who chose to solve a regulatory problem nobody else had bothered to fix, that global runway is exactly the kind of ambition Panton has been building toward from the start. “PQQ is the natural second ingredient for the CellVive platform because it works hand in hand with CellVive NMN,” she says. “The platform gives these compounds a proprietary, regulated home in the Australian market… as we advance a broader pipeline through Australia’s regulatory pathway and into global markets.”
It’s a rare thing, a Japanese manufacturing giant choosing to build its Australian future around a company led by two women rather than the other way around. For Panton, it’s simply proof that the pathway she helped build is exactly as valuable as she always believed it would be.
