As teens grow up, so does the way they communicate. WhatsApp has announced parental controls for teens: a set of flexible, optional tools that parents and teens set up together, so each family can choose the WhatsApp experience that suits them. The aim is to give parents a way to guide without reading over a shoulder.
Here is what’s new and how WhatsApp Parental Controls actually work.
What parents can do
Choose privacy settings together. Parents can help pick the right settings for their teen, such as who can see their profile photo and who can add them to groups. If a teen wants to relax any of those settings, they need their parent’s approval through a parent-set PIN.
Keep up with who your teen is connecting with. Parents can get a notification when their teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group their teen is in grows meaningfully in size.
Shape how teens use Channels and Status. Parents can choose how their teen uses Channels, whose Status updates they can see and who can see theirs.
Decide on the Meta AI experience. Parents can pick the Meta AI setting that suits their family, choosing between the default 13+ setting and a stricter Limited Content option.
Built for conversation, not monitoring
WhatsApp says these controls are designed to support open conversations between parents and teens about how to use the app, rather than to monitor chats. A few details worth knowing:
- Optional: every family is different, so the controls are entirely up to you
- Flexible: parents choose how much support their teen needs and can adjust or switch the controls off at any time
- Simple to set up: a single PIN and clear alerts keep parents in the loop
- Still private: with controls on, a teen’s personal messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption, and no one outside the chat, not even WhatsApp, can see or hear them
WhatsApp describes this as the start, with more controls to be added step by step based on what families say they need.

Conversation starters for setting it up
The controls work best as a shared decision. A few ways to open the chat:
- Sit down together and go through the settings one at a time, so your teen sees the reasoning behind each choice
- Talk about what each setting does, such as why group invitations from strangers can be worth limiting
- Agree on how and when you’ll revisit the settings as your teen gets older
- Let your teen know the PIN is there to start a conversation when they’d like a setting changed
Our take
Teens are often on WhatsApp for school group chats, sports teams and keeping in touch with family, so it’s a space many households already share. Controls that put the decisions on the table for both generations, while keeping personal messages private, are a practical way to build good habits early. Setup is quick, and nothing is locked in, so families can start light and adjust as their teen grows.
