The role of males in dismantling the barriers and biases that often hinder their female counterparts’ participation and progress in tech should not be underestimated. David Calvo, CIO at Northern Health and a member of Women Love Tech’s upcoming mentoring program, is among the men contributing to creating a more inclusive environment. One where diverse perspectives can thrive and drive meaningful change to ensure that tech reflects the diversity of the world it serves.

David’s incorporative approach to leadership originates from the significant cultural shifts in his childhood. Born in Venezuela, he moved to Mexico, then to Spain as a six year old, where he spent his formative years. This journey influenced his worldview. “Language was probably the first major lesson,” David recalls. “Despite the common language, I was concerned about being understood, given the different accents.”

Reflecting on his education, David acknowledges that the challenges he encountered laid a foundation for his success. For example, the limitations of his outdated Computer Science studies in Spain prompted him to seek more progressive educational opportunities in the United States. He enrolled at Brigham Young University in Hawaii where he found a program up-to-date with advancements in AI, robotics, and automation. After completing his degree, David returned to Spain briefly. Before embarking on a professional journey that would take him to Australia. Here, his career began in an HR company where he stayed for over 11 years, gradually rising to the position of CIO. This role eventually led him to Melbourne and Northern Health.

This expedition ultimately equipped David with a global perspective and a deep understanding of cultural diversity. A view that he integrates into his leadership style to champion inclusivity. And, experiences that continue to inform his advocacy for diversity in a tech-driven world as a result.

Today, David’s work at Northern Health focuses on digital transformation, particularly in cloud security and big data. His notable projects include working with Logicalis. “Logicalis has been among the most mature companies that I’ve worked with,” he praises the collaboration. “They are enablers, not only on the technical side but also on the human side”.

His approach to technology in healthcare is both innovative and cautious. David acknowledges the potential of AI and other emerging technologies but stresses the importance of security and proper implementation. “You have to embrace it and teach people how to use it properly,” he advises.

However, David’s role is not just about implementing technological advancements. But, also about creating a supportive environment where every team member feels empowered to contribute. His leadership approach emphasises openness and adaptability. And, he adjusts his style to suit his team’s needs, fostering a culture of respect and collaboration.

He believes in adjusting his approach to suit his team rather than imposing a rigid style. “I create an environment where people feel empowered and safe,” David explains. This philosophy extends to nurturing innovation within his team, encouraging open dialogue and valuing even the craziest ideas as they often spark significant advancements.

One of his unique contributions to workplace culture at Northern Health is his groodle, Logan. Bringing Logan to work has turned the office into a more welcoming and relaxed environment. And earned David the affectionate title of ‘the guy who brings the dog.’ This small gesture has had a big impact on team morale and engagement. Significantly, fostering a more supportive atmosphere where individuals feel valued beyond their professional contributions.

Looking ahead, David envisions a future where Northern Health continues to lead in healthcare innovation. With a focus on enhancing patient care through advanced technology and secure data management. His leadership philosophy, centred on inclusivity and innovation, serves as a blueprint for aspiring leaders in tech who aim to create positive change and empower underrepresented groups.
