Fifth generation of Snap AR Spectacles

Today Snap Inc. unveiled the company’s fifth generation of AR Spectacles – advanced, transparent glasses designed to transform augmented reality experiences. These standalone devices enable users to interact with Lenses and explore their surroundings in fun new ways with friends.

The new glasses are big black and bulky looking. Hand gestures and voice commands are used to navigate the AR features, with the main menu remaining accessible in the palm of your hand.

Snap OS employs Snap Inc.’s proprietary technologies, like Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) micro-projectors and waveguides, which ensure clear and vivid images whether indoors or under direct sunlight.

The Spectacles feature a dual system-on-a-chip architecture powered by two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. This setup distributes computing tasks across both processors, providing immersive experiences while optimizing power consumption and improving heat dissipation. Users can spend up to 45 minutes of continuous standalone use with these high-tech glasses. The user time is another feature the company says it is hoping to improve on.

Seeking to encourage innovation, Snap Inc. has partnered with OpenAI to grant developers access to potent multimodal large language models. This collaboration aims to simplify the creation of Lenses that can identify objects and provide contextual information.

Developers in the U.S. can join the Spectacles Developer Program for $99 per month with a one-year commitment by visiting www.spectacles.com/lens-studio
