Spotify has just released a new feature that lets you jazz up your playlist cover art, making sure your music collections look as good as they sound. With over 8 billion playlists soundtracking listeners’ lives, Spotify is handing users the reins to craft personalised cover art, adding a visual layer to every song, mood, and moment.
This new tool is rolling out in beta to 65 markets in English and is easy to use on the mobile app. Now, every playlist you’ve carefully curated for your Sunday drive, workout session, or chill evening can be as visually catchy as the beats inside.
Here’s how you can compose your very own playlist cover symphony.
Unleash your inner artist
First things first, pick a playlist you’ve already created or start a new one, then tap the three-dot menu and select “Create Cover Art.” From here, you can harmonise colours, add fun stickers, layer on some snazzy text, or even upload a personal image. With options like text effects and colour gradients, you’ll be singing your own praises (in perfect pitch, of course).
Not only can you set the tone with your favourite shades, but you can also make the playlist uniquely yours. Whether it’s a quirky selfie, a shot from your last holiday, or something out of your creative playbook, each playlist cover is a chance to showcase your taste in both music and style.
Inspired by icons
Spotify has taken this launch to a whole new octave by partnering with artists and designers known for striking album art. Musical talents like Clairo, Jamie xx, and Arlo Parks have joined forces with visual wizards like Imogene Strauss, who’s worked with Charli XCX, and Cey Adams, famous for designing logos for The Notorious B.I.G., Beastie Boys, and Jay-Z. These artists each designed their own playlist covers, showing just how much creativity can play into this feature. So whether you’re feeling a little grunge, going full hip-hop, or leaning toward lo-fi, there’s inspiration for every genre and mood.
Hitting the high notes
Before you start composing, remember that each playlist can only hold one cover at a time, so make sure you’re happy with the final product before you hit “Save.” If you want to keep multiple designs, just create a copy of your playlist first and experiment away!
Not sure where to start? Try thinking about the feeling of the playlist itself: a workout mix might call for bold colours and motivational text, while a rainy-day playlist might look perfect with moody blues and abstract shapes. Whatever your vibe, Spotify has the tools for you to rock the right cover – aurally and visually!
