It’s always wonderful to recognise women excelling in the field of STEM, so we would like to highlight the fact that the Australian Academy of Science has recognised 21 scientists including Professor Jennie Brand-Miller.

She was among four academics from the University of Sydney to be elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

Professor Jennie Brand-Miller is from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and Charles Perkins Centre.

Her award is in recognition for her work in understanding the role of the glycemic index (GI) in health and disease. She has transformed the way carbohydrate foods are considered by scientists, physicians and consumers.

“I feel absolutely over the moon about being elected to the Academy,” she said.

“I believe that it says that my peers acknowledge that what I’ve been doing in my research has been important, has made a step forward in science.

“It is, to me, a really crowning award.”

Jennie Brand-Miller has championed the role of the glycaemic index (GI) in health and disease and transformed the way carbohydrate foods are considered by scientists, physicians and consumers.

She demonstrated that the adverse effects of high blood sugars apply not only to diabetes but to obesity and cardiovascular disease.

By establishing international standards and testing services for industry and compiling reliable databases, Brand-Miller facilitated epidemiological, agricultural and industrial research application of the GI around the world. By writing books and launching a food labelling program, she translated new knowledge into actions that helped millions of individuals to adopt healthier diets.
What an incredible role model she is.
