I have a complicated relationship with winter accessories.
On one hand, I love them. Chunky scarves, oversized coats, the occasional pair of sunglasses worn purely because they make me feel like I have somewhere important to be. (Even if that somewhere is the supermarket).
On the other hand, winter has a habit of making getting dressed feel like a strategic operation. There are layers to consider. Hair to protect. And accessories that look fabulous in theory, then suddenly disappear beneath beanies.
Which brings me to the great comeback I never expected: clip-on earrings. Those gloriously oversized, very 80s add-ons that once adorned the ears of everyone from Princess Diana to Madonna are having a moment again. Because apparently, the decade that gave us shoulder pads, power dressing and earrings large enough to require their own postcode was onto something.
The 80s understood one important fashion rule: accessories should make a statement. The only difference is that today’s version can also play your favourite playlist.
Enter the Shokz OpenDots 2.
Because while I have happily embrces a dramatic coat for colder weather, I have historically struggled with one particular accessory: headphones.
The headphones versus outfit dilemma
Traditional headphones have never exactly been fashion’s easiest companion.
Over-ear styles can flatten carefully styled hair, compete with earrings and make a cosy winter outfit suddenly feel a little more “airport lounge” than “effortlessly put together.” Tiny earbuds solve the bulk problem, but often disappear completely – and can come with the constant annoyance of blocking out the world around you.
The Shokz OpenDots 2 feels like the answer to a very modern wardrobe problem: how do you enjoy great sound without sacrificing your outfit?
The answer is surprisingly simple.
Make your headphones look like an accessory.
The clip-on design sits gently around the ear rather than inside it, creating a look that feels closer to jewellery than traditional audio technology. In fact, when paired with winter coats, and oversized knits, the OpenDots 2 genuinely feels like it belongs.
Which is not something I ever thought I would say about headphones.
Jewellery, but make it tech
The OpenDots 2 is Shokz’s most advanced clip-on earbud yet, and while the style is what caught my attention first, the technology is what makes them worth wearing all day.
At just 6.4 grams per earbud, they are incredibly lightweight. The flexible JointArc structure adapts to the shape of your ear, creating a secure fit without the pressure that can come with traditional in-ear buds.
As a result, they stay put without making your ears feel like they are being punished for wanting to listen to a podcast.
And because they use an open-ear design, you can stay connected to your surroundings while still enjoying your audio. This is particularly useful during everyday moments – walking through busy streets, grabbing coffee, working from a café or simply wanting to hear what is happening around you.
Because sometimes you need your playlist, but you also need to hear someone say, “Excuse me, that’s my trolley.”
Small design, surprisingly big sound
The biggest surprise with the OpenDots 2 is that something so compact can deliver such impressive audio.
Inside the tiny clip-on design is Shokz’s Bassphere 2.0 acoustic technology, designed to enhance low-frequency performance and deliver richer bass. Add Dolby Audio and MirrorPitch technology, which helps direct sound towards your ears while reducing sound leakage, and the experience feels much bigger than the earbuds themselves.
Whether I was listening to music, catching up on podcasts or taking calls, the sound felt balanced and immersive without needing a bulky design.
They are proof that “small but mighty” doesn’t just apply to handbags.
The practical details matter too
Of course, looking good is only part of the equation.
The OpenDots 2 delivers up to 10 hours of listening time on a single charge, with up to 40 hours when combined with the charging case. A quick five-minute charge gives up to two hours of playback, which is perfect for those moments when you realise your battery is low just before leaving the house.
They also feature new force sensor controls, allowing you to manage music and calls with simple pinch gestures, plus MultiPoint Pairing so you can switch between two connected devices.
The dedicated bone-conduction microphone works alongside dual air-conduction microphones and AI-powered noise reduction to help keep calls clear, even when life around you is less than silent.
And because winter rarely means perfect weather, the earbuds are IP57 water and dust resistant, making them ready for everything from sweaty gym sessions to unexpected rain.
Winter wardrobe approved
The real test for me was not just whether they sounded good.
It was whether I actually wanted to wear them.
And surprisingly, I did.
The OpenDots 2 worked with everything from oversized wool coats and scarves to casual weekend outfits. They added a subtle futuristic detail without competing with the rest of my look.
They also solved one of my biggest winter styling frustrations: wanting to listen to something while still wearing earrings.
Because as much as I love a dramatic statement earring, I don’t want my technology fighting for attention.
The jewellery-inspired clip-on accessories available with purchases through Shokz take this even further, adding another layer of personal style. It feels less like wearing a gadget and more like choosing an accessory.
Which, considering how much time we spend wearing headphones, feels overdue.
Meet the OpenDots Air: the everyday little sister
Alongside the OpenDots 2, Shokz has also introduced the OpenDots Air – a slightly more accessible option that brings the same clip-on philosophy to everyday listening.
Weighing just 6.3 grams per earbud, the OpenDots Air keeps the lightweight, jewellery-inspired design while offering features including Bassphere acoustic technology, DirectPitch technology to help minimise sound leakage, multipoint pairing and up to 36 hours of battery life with the charging case.
Available in Daybreak Purple and Black, it feels like the slightly more minimalist sibling – perfect for those who want the style of the clip-on design without needing all the premium upgrades.

Hear, Hear …
I never expected headphones to become part of my winter wardrobe.
But then again, I never expected clip-on earrings to make a comeback either.
The 80s taught us that accessories should be bold, fun and impossible to ignore. The Shokz OpenDots 2 simply updated the idea for a generation that wants their accessories to do more.
Because these days, the best statement pieces don’t just complete your outfit.
They also have a soundtrack.
