Three Reasons This Handheld Steamer Earned Its Spot in My Carry-On Bag

Challenge #1: Packing for a fight with only carry-on luggage sounds very cruisey cool … until you’re sitting on the floor of your bedroom, re-weighing your suitcase and removing items that suddently don’t seem to important. (Who really needs Cold & Flu tablets in the middle of Winter, right?)

Seven kilograms. That was the magical number that stood between me and a very unpleasant three-figure excess baggage fee that somehow costs more than the flight itself. (Guess the airline). Every item suddenly has to justify its existence. The second pair of shoes? Questionable. The “just in case” jacket? Negotiable. A handheld garment steamer? A luxury… or a brilliant travel investment?

So, when I stuffed the Tefal AeroSteam Handheld Garment Steamer into my Samsonite for a recent interstate trip, I’ll admit I had a brief moment of doubt. In the ruthless battle for carry-on space, every centimetre counted. Was I really sacrificing precious luggage room for something designed to deal with wrinkles?

Fast forward to arriving at my Airbnb, unpacking my carefully folded outfits and discovering that everything looked like it had been through a wrestling match during transit, and suddenly the AeroSteam felt like the smartest thing I packed. Because the reality of travelling light is that your clothes might leave home looking perfectly organised, but they do not always survive the journey with their dignity intact.

Then came challenge #2. While some holiday rentals proudly offer coffee machines, board games and enough decorative cushions to fill a small furniture store, many still treat an iron like a rare luxury item. . You can find a record player, a selection of herbal teas and a beautifully styled bathroom – but something to decrease your crisp white shirt? Suddenly, everyone – including the lovely Airbnb I had booked – has embraced a minimalist lifestyle.

Finally, challenge #3 entered the chat – the one every traveller eventually faces. Landing with barely enough time to shower, change and head straight out for dinner. I did not have seconds to spare hunting down an iron. Nor wrestling with an ironing board. And absolutely no opportunity to pretend the wrinkles were somehow “part of the outfit.”

By this point, the AeroSteam had solved all the travel problems I’d packed it for. A a few of the ones I didn’t realise I’d have.

I’ve tested my fair share of handheld steamers over the years, And the biggest frustration has always been the same: they steam, but they don’t always smooth. You end up waving a device at a stubborn crease while your clothes gently flap around, hoping for a miracle.

The Tefal AeroSteam takes a completely different approach.

Powered by Tefal’s patented OptiFlow technology, it combines steam, heat and suction in one handheld device. Instead of simply blasting steam at your clothes, it actively pulls the fabric towards the heated soleplate, creating tension that helps smooth wrinkles more effectively.

At the centre of this clever design is an 11-blade propeller spinning at up to 18,000RPM, generating 7.5L/s airflow and 2kPa of pressure. While those numbers sound more like something you’d expect from a tiny aircraft than a garment steamer, the result is surprisingly straightforward: your clothes stay in place while the AeroSteam works through creases quickly.

The biggest travel win was not needing an ironing board at all!

This means, no balancing an iron on a questionable Airbnb table. Nor searching through cupboards hoping your accommodation has one hidden away … Only to discover an ancient iron that looks like it has survived several decades and possibly a small electrical fire.

Just steam and go.

The AeroSteam heats up in just 30 seconds, making it ideal for those classic travel moments where you are already running late but still changing outfits for the third time. Tefal claims it can deliver iron-like results in under three minutes, and after testing it on shirts, linen dresses and lightweight travel pieces, it genuinely impressed.

Even better, clothes are ready to wear almost immediately thanks to the heated ceramic soleplate, which helps reduce moisture. For anyone who has tried to steam an outfit five minutes before leaving and then awkwardly stood around waiting for it to dry, this is a game changer.

The versatility is another standout feature. With three modes – Turbo suction for stubborn wrinkles, Soft suction for synthetic fabrics and Steam Only for delicate garments — the AeroSteam adapts to whatever your suitcase has thrown at you.

My linen pieces appreciated the stronger setting. My delicate fabrics definitely preferred the gentler approach.

The removable 100ml water tank is another smart travel-friendly feature. It provides enough capacity for around three shirts or four tees without turning your carry-on into a portable appliance showroom.

And despite packing plenty of technology into a compact design, it still feels premium. Designed and manufactured in France, the AeroSteam has the solid quality you’d expect from Tefal while remaining practical enough to justify its place in your luggage.

It also uses up to 57 per cent less energy compared with Tefal’s previous-generation turbo handheld steamer, showing that convenience and efficiency can happily coexist.

After taking it away with me, the AeroSteam has officially moved from “optional travel extra” to “why didn’t I pack this sooner?”

Because while I will probably continue overestimating how many outfits I can fit into a 7kg suitcase, at least those outfits now have a fighting chance.

The airline might still judge my luggage.

My Airbnb might still forget the iron.

And I might still arrive at dinner with five minutes to spare.

But thanks to the Tefal AeroSteam, I no longer have to look like my clothes made the same journey I did.
