The Hidden Health Risks of Snoring … And How Tech is Solving Them

For most people, snoring is filed away as a minor domestic irritation – something you apologise for at breakfast. But sleep scientists increasingly treat it as something else: an early warning signal from the body that shouldn’t be ignored.

In Australia, the stakes are bigger than they might seem. Roughly 35 per cent of the population is sleep deprived, and globally, around 30% of people experience afflictions like sleep apnoea. Snoring sits at the intersection of both problems –  it’s often the audible symptom of a restricted airway, and restricted airways mean fragmented, lower-quality sleep, night after night.

When “harmless” snoring isn’t so harmless

Snoring happens when the upper airway becomes partially obstructed during sleep, causing surrounding tissue to vibrate. For some people, it’s occasional and positional –  a product of sleeping on their back, alcohol, or congestion. For others, it’s nightly and quietly chips away at sleep architecture, reducing time spent in the deep and REM stages the body relies on for repair and recovery.

Dr. Nicole Moyen, a sleep scientist for biometric sleep company Eight Sleep, says the line between a lifestyle nuisance and a medical issue isn’t always obvious –  but there are signs worth watching. Asked whether tech that “corrects” sleep overnight might mask something more serious like obstructive sleep apnoea, she offered this:

“Take a wedge pillow: it elevates the head and can reduce snoring. For someone with mild sleep apnea, that small change might genuinely help. But if it stops working –  say, on vacation without the pillow –  that contrast is often what prompts someone to see a doctor. The real signal to seek medical care is when a solution stops improving how you feel or function. In many cases, these consumer devices aren’t masking problems –  they’re helping people discover them.”

In other words, persistent snoring paired with other symptoms –  daytime fatigue, waking gasping for air, or breathing that seems to stop and start –  is the kind of pattern that warrants a conversation with a doctor, not just a trip to the pharmacy for nasal strips.

Why disrupted sleep hits harder than we think

The consequences of chronic poor sleep quality extend well beyond feeling groggy. Poor sleep quality can contribute to high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and reduced immune function – a list that reads less like “tiredness” and more like a slow-building health crisis.

That’s part of why sleep tech has shifted focus. Traditional solutions –  mattresses that simply support the body while it rests, pharmaceutical aids that can alter sleep stages, or wearables that log data without acting on it –  leave the body to adapt to its environment and recover largely on its own. None of them intervene while you’re actually asleep.

The shift from tracking to actively responding

This is where a new category of biometric sleep systems is changing the equation. Rather than reporting on how you slept the next morning, devices like the Eight Sleep Pod are designed to detect physiological signals in real time and adjust the sleep environment mid-night, without waking the user.

Explaining the distinction between passive tracking and active intervention, Dr. Moyen said, “Wearable devices, and their corresponding apps, are able to measure and report sleep metrics like sleep staging (deep & rapid eye movement sleep) and biometrics like heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), but these devices rely on you to make behavioral changes to improve sleep and recovery. In contrast, the Pod measures the same sleep and biometrics and makes bed temperature and head elevation adjustments in real time to optimize sleep and recovery –  the Pod closes the loop and improves your sleep.”

Snoring detection is a good example of how that “closed loop” works. The Pod uses chest-level sensors to pick up vibrations caused by snoring, distinguishing them from other nighttime noises. That data feeds a neural network –  trained on more than 2,500 known snorers –  which identifies snoring with 93 per cent accuracy compared to audio recordings, according to Dr. Moyen.

Once detected, the system responds by silently elevating the head of the bed on the affected side, a feature introduced with the Pod Ultra in 2024. A clinical study capturing more than 200 nights of data found up to a 31 per cent decrease in snoring at a 6-degree head elevation, and up to 45 per cent at 15 degrees –  averaging close to a 50 per cent reduction, more than five times greater than the roughly 7% reduction found in earlier research on head elevation alone.

Where the line sits between lifestyle tech and medical treatment

None of this makes biometric sleep tech a replacement for a proper sleep apnoea diagnosis or treatments like CPAP therapy. Dr. Moyen is candid about where the boundary sits.

“The way we are thinking about it: if members are able to improve their sleep and quality of life with products that don’t require lengthy diagnosis and prescription processes, we are meeting our mission. Just because something is therapeutic, doesn’t mean it needs to be a medical device,” she said.

That’s the most useful way to frame this new generation of sleep tech: not a substitute for medical care, but an early-response layer that can meaningfully reduce snoring and improve sleep quality –  while making it easier to notice when a problem needs more than a tech fix.

If snoring is accompanied by daytime fatigue, interrupted breathing, or a partner reporting pauses in your breathing overnight, that’s still a conversation for a doctor. But for the everyday snoring that quietly erodes sleep quality, real-time biometric intervention is proving to be a genuinely new kind of solution –  one that acts while you sleep, rather than waiting for you to notice the damage the next morning.
