Ever wondered just how much the digital world buzzes while you sip your coffee? The answer is… a lot. With its 12th annual Data Never Sleeps report, cloud-based data and AI platform Domo has once again dropped jaws by quantifying the sheer volume of data created every single minute of our hyper-connected lives. From TikTok’s meteoric rise to the way AI is quietly reshaping our habits, this year’s study is a fascinating look at the pulse of the internet.

A mere minute …

Let’s break it down. In just 60 seconds, TikTok users upload a staggering 16,000 videos, while 138.9 million reels play across Facebook and Instagram. Meanwhile, virtual collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Slack are revolutionising how we work, clocking in 229 million meeting minutes and 1.04 million messages sent every minute, respectively. Even the humble Zoom app gets in on the action, with 288 downloads per minute.

All about AI

A standout revelation of 2024 is that Google searches are down 6% compared to last year. This resulted in dropping from 6.3 million searches per minute to 5.9 million. Why? Generative AI. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and AI assistants like Siri (fielding over a million questions a minute) are nudging us toward new ways of finding answers. It’s no longer just about keywords – it’s about conversations, personalisation, and efficiency.

Josh James, CEO of Domo, called it a “new tipping point,” with AI poised to dethrone traditional digital giants. And, with Siri and Gemini proving indispensable for millions, it’s clear AI isn’t just a tech trend – it’s a full-blown shift in how we navigate our lives.

Social media screen time

Not everything is smooth scrolling for traditional entertainment platforms. Netflix, once the king of streaming, has seen a 19% drop in viewing hours since 2021, now tallying 362,962 hours streamed per minute. But, it’s not all bad news in the land of screens. TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram Reels are thriving, stealing hours of our lives one captivating clip at a time.

The explosive engagement on these platforms reflects a cultural shift. We’re consuming content differently – faster, shorter, and more interactive. Those 16,000 TikTok videos uploaded every minute? They’re redefining how we entertain ourselves and share our stories.

Budget blow outs

In case you needed another reason to appreciate the power of data, Domo’s Data Never Sleeps report revealed that during Cyber Week, global shoppers spent an eye-popping $43.6 million. Every 60 seconds! If that doesn’t make you reconsider your budgeting app, what will?

DoorDash also joined the feast, racking up $126,763 in orders per minute. The takeaway? (Pun intended.) Digital commerce isn’t just booming – it’s redefining convenience, speed, and consumer expectations.

Risky business

Amidst all this rapid growth, there’s a sobering statistic. A whopping 4,080 records are compromised every minute in data breaches. The faster we generate data, the more we must prioritise cybersecurity. As Peter Steggall, VP of Domo APAC, noted, businesses need to stay ahead by investing in robust, AI-ready systems to protect their assets.

The Data Never Sleeps report isn’t just a collection of impressive stats – it’s a reminder of how deeply digital life intertwines with our reality. From shopping and streaming to scrolling social media, the data we generate isn’t just numbers; it’s a reflection of how we live, connect, and innovate.
