Every year, Australia’s most popular search engine pulls back the curtain to reveal what had us furiously typing into search bars. This year’s Google Year in Search paints a vibrant picture of what Aussies Googled in 2024 – whether we were glued to global politics, riding the Taylor Swift wave, or perfecting our air fryer game. Spoiler: we’ve been busy.
A political rollercoaster
In news that is largely expected the “US election” topped the charts. Between debates, memes, and the usual Trump-Biden theatrics, we couldn’t get enough of the drama stateside. Back home, “QLD election results” and Aurora Australis sightings kept us in the loop, proving Aussies love to be informed while indulging their curious streak.
Sports: A national obsession
Given Australia’s status as a sporting nation, it’s no surprise that this year, searches for the Olympics, Euros, and T20 World Cup sent data analysts into overdrive. We cheered for our women’s teams, Googled Paralympic updates, and dove into niche events like artistic swimming. Oh, and don’t forget about Aussie stars like Sam Kerr and Ariarne Titmus – our hearts (and search histories) belong to them.
The T-Swift era
Taylor Swift fever swept the nation, thanks to her blockbuster Australian tour. From “How to make Taylor Swift friendship bracelets” to her romance with Travis Kelce, she was everywhere. On the screen, we tuned into hits like Saltburn and Boy Swallows Universe while trying to conquer the devilishly addictive game Connections.
Eating, upskilling and overseas adventures
In the kitchen, we got experimental. From Jamie Oliver’s air fryer recipes to quirky creations like “Oatzempic,” we weren’t afraid to try something new. Cucumber salad went viral, while “Olympic chocolate muffins” took the gold for themed treats. Aussies clearly love their snacks as much as their main courses.
This year was also all about levelling up. Whether it was “DIY car maintenance,” “how to inspect a used car,” or “how to mew” (seriously, look it up), we Googled our way to newfound skills. Crafty types tackled slime, sugar wax, and even Easter Bunny footprints – because why not?
Dreaming of escapes both near and far, we searched flights to King Island and Bali with equal enthusiasm. Melbourne, Launceston, and Japan also topped the list, proving Aussies have diverse tastes when it comes to travel.
Words we loved
Finally, from “demure” to “baroque,” this year’s Google Year in Search vocab findings revealed a nation fascinated with fancy words. Whether brushing up for crosswords or adding flair to conversations, the results of What Aussies Googled in 2024 revealed we all got a little more articulate this year!
