You can watch the movie of the original cast performance of Hamilton tomorrow on Disney+. Filmed halfway through 2016, the just-released recording features the entire original Broadway cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.
For those who never made it to see Hamilton on Broadway while this cast was still playing, it’ll be a treat to see for yourself the performances that rocked each audience who saw it in 2015 and 2016 – the same performances that were recorded on CD the same year.
If you can’t wait until tomorrow to watch it on Disney+ here’s another trailer, giving you a peak at Angelica Schuyler (played by Renee Elise Goldsberry) as she sings her song, Satisfied.
This song is one of Hamilton’s most well-known and in a musical which near universal critical and audience acclaim, that’s quite a claim. Sure, in the middle of 2020, we could look at Hamilton as perhaps too caught up in America’s Founding Fathers with not enough attention to the mothers and women of the day. But with a cast of diverse races and background, the does effectively connect the revolutionary spirit of the 18th century and the same spirit that has filled them recently in support of George Floyd and others.
When you watch the movie, you can see the director, Thomas Kail – who also directed the stage show – prefers to concentrate on the individual performances rather than other elements. But when watching the film, you get the close-ups which catch nuances you could have missed at the theatre.
It’s easy to get swept up in all the strong emotions because Hamilton has all the drama and importance it deserves as it covers its themes of founding a country and forming its cultural myths.
When you watch Hamilton, five years on from its Broadway debut, you can see why this musical has attracted such rave reviews and large audiences. The structure, music, story-line and casting are only some of the incredible pluses which make Hamilton what it is. Enjoy watching it this weekend.
