Imagine your phone rings. The caller ID flashes with a name that immediately brings a smile to your face: your child. You answer, and the voice on the other end is unmistakable. It has the exact same tone, the familiar cadence, and the distinct warmth you’ve known their entire life.
But it isn’t them. It’s a scammer using highly sophisticated artificial intelligence to clone their voice.
A similar nightmare recently happened to my friend. Her son was living overseas, so when she received an urgent text from his number, her maternal instincts instantly kicked in. She transferred money at his behest only to realise later she was being scammed. But imagine hearing your child’s exact voice on the line, fraught with panic and pleading for immediate financial help to resolve a sudden emergency, you most likely wouldn’t hesitate and before you know it, you’ve sent your hard-earned money to AI deep fake scammers.
And you wouldn’t be alone. This nightmarish scenario is more common than ever, and we all need to be aware of it and protect ourselves against the new world we live in. According to a recent INTERPOL Global Financial Fraud Threat Assessment, impersonation fraud is a leading contributor to over $400 billion in global losses. Scammers are now combining two devastating tactics: spoofing familiar phone numbers and using easily accessible AI voice-cloning technology to sound exactly like loved ones or employers. Experts warn that AI audio deepfakes have become so terrifyingly realistic that the human ear can no longer reliably know the difference.
Recognising the profound emotional and financial toll of these attacks, Google has stepped up with an industry-first solution to fight back.
Enter Android’s “Fake Call Detection”
Google is introducing Fake Call Detection, a ground-breaking security feature built directly into the Phone by Google app. Designed to intercept spoofed calls in real time, this feature aims to protect families from falling victim to the exact type of fraud that trapped my friend.
HOW IT WORKS: THE DIGITAL HANDSHAKE
[ Caller's Device ] [ Your Android Phone ]

│ │ via encrypted RCS

If a scammer spoofs the number, the signal is missing. Your phone
instantly pings the contact's real device. If it answers "I'm not calling,"
an immediate on-screen warning advises you to hang up.
The Power of a Silent Handshake
Operating automatically behind the scenes, Fake Call Detection works like a secure digital handshake between devices.
When someone in your contacts calls you, and you are both utilising the Phone by Google app, their device sends a silent, real-time confirmation signal to verify the call’s legitimacy. Because this protocol relies on end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology, the entire process remains completely private.
If a scammer attempts to impersonate your contact by spoofing their number, that initial confirmation signal will be entirely missing. Your phone will immediately notice the discrepancy and ping your loved one’s actual device to double-check. If their real device confirms it isn’t currently making a call, a prominent warning will instantly flash on your screen, advising you to hang up immediately.
When Can You Get It?
Google is rolling out Fake Call Detection globally to Android 12+ devices, starting with Pixel handsets. Because Phone by Google is already the default dialler for most Android users, the feature will be on by default for eligible devices. If your device uses a different default app, you can easily download Phone by Google from the Play Store to gain this crucial layer of protection.
Furthermore, because Google built this on RCS, which is an open standard, they are actively encouraging other device manufacturers and app developers to adopt the technology to raise security standards across the entire mobile industry.
Technology has given scammers powerful new tools, but features like Fake Call Detection prove that innovation can also be our strongest shield. It provides the vital peace of mind we need to ensure that when our family calls, it really is them on the line.
