With the new Samsung Galaxy S5 and PayPal, you can now shop safely online with the new PayPal fingerprint authentication on the Samsung S5. With 5.5 million active PayPal accounts in Australia, Samsung’s partnership with the online payment provider allows consumers to change the way they transact online. Australian Galaxy S5 users will be among the first in the world to use the fingerprint scanner to make online payments using their mobile phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 includes a fingerprint scanner – a unique password that users can never forget. Australians can register up to three fingerprints on the Galaxy S5 and utilise them to unlock the phone and access web-based accounts and Samsung Apps. Samsung has made available the Software Development Kit for the fingerprint scanner and anticipates more applications will use this technology in the coming months.

What Does It Mean?

With the new biometric feature means Galaxy S5 users will no longer need to remember passwords or login details across millions of PayPal merchants. Samsung’s new fingerprint authentication allows consumers to seamlessly shop on mobile and in-store at the millions of international and local merchants that accept PayPal.

“We are proud to be the first payments company to support Samsung’s mobile fingerprint authentication technology,” said Jeff Clementz, managing director, of PayPal Australia.

How Does It Work?

PayPal provides a secure wallet in the cloud, never storing personal information on the device. Customers can use their fingers to pay with PayPal from their new GALAXY S5, with the FIDO ReadyTM software on the device securely communicating between the fingerprint sensor and PayPal’s service in the cloud.

Is It Safe?

The only information the device shares with PayPal is a unique encrypted key that allows PayPal to verify the identity of the customer without having to store any biometric information on PayPal’s servers.

“We are excited to bring this seamless and secure online shopping experience to Australian smartphone users through our partnership with one of the most trusted payment providers in Australia,” said Jenny Goodridge, Director of IM Product Marketing, Samsung Electronics Australia.

“We share a common goal with PayPal to create technology that complements and actively enhances the everyday life of Australians. The fingerprint payment authentication technology brings PayPal’s technology and systems to the GALAXY S5, allowing consumers to easily shop and pay on our most innovative products.”
